About our Visa Service

With effect from 1st January 2012, all Holiday or Business travelers to Sri Lanka must have Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for entering in to Sri Lanka. Please visit http://www.eta.gov.lk for more information. 

Notice for Travellers

Travellerwho wish to visit Sri Lanka for a short holiday, a short business trip or to transit through, needs to apply and obtain an ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION (ETA) prior to arrival in Sri Lanka. For short-term visits limited up to 30 days travellers can apply online by themselves through http://www.eta.gov.lk or by physically submitting an application to the Sri Lanka Mission in the respective country.

Important Note:

Foreigners other than Thai nationals who want to apply for visa to visit Sri Lanka at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand necessarily must have a work visa or a residence visa in Thailand. Non – Thai nationals who are on tourist visa in Thailand can apply for a visa electronically at ETA (www.eta.gov.lk). Each visa applicant is required to pay non-refundable visa application fee and the fee may vary according to the citizenship and type of visa.

When applying visa ETA by yourself or by third parties payments should be made through the official web site www.eta.gov.lk and obtain acknowledgement of ETA application. Any payments made to other websites or agencies are not valid to process a valid ETA. Therefore, always ensure that the payments are made by accessing to the official website of Sri Lanka ETA in order to avoid making repayment at the port of entry to Sri Lanka.

Note: Credit/ATM/Debit cards AND personal or Company cheques will not be accepted.

If the applicant desires to pay by a Money order, Bank draft, direct bank transfer, please contact the Embassy for prior instructions.

Note: If the applicant sends Money orders, Bank Draft or directly credit money into the Embassy bank accounts, without prior instructions, the responsibility lies with the applicant for any loss/shortage or delay.

How to Apply

Through ETA:

Submit application online visa Electronic Travel Authorization ETA (for short visits) Please visit http://www.eta.gov.lk to submit your application.The ETA is initially limited up to 30 days from the date of arrival and it can be extended up to six months by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka upon your request.The ETA is issued through an on-line system. No passport copies, documents or photographs are required.

There is no requirement to endorse the ETA on the passport. You are advised to apply for visa at least 10 days prior to your scheduled travel date andprocessing of the visa may take up to 03 working days. To check your ETA application status you may log onto the ETA website and click the “check status” button.

Please note that the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka maintains a non-refundable policy. So please ensure that the application form is filled correctly. Once the application is submitted it can neither be cancelled nor a refund obtained.

It is advisable to keep a copy of the ETA approval with you to be produced at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. All ETA holders should fulfill the following requirements at the port of entry.

– A passport valid for not less than 6 months from the date of arrival.
– A confirmed return ticket.
– Proof for sufficient funds to meet the expenses during the stay.

In the event of ETA being rejected, the system will send a referral notification to the applicant and he/she may contact the respective Embassy for assistance in order to obtain necessary instructions from the Department of Immigration & Emigration . The status of the visa cannot be changed after arrival in Sri Lanka (i.e Tourist visa will not be converted to Residence / Working visa).

Note:
On line ETA facility is not available for visits for the following purposes;

– To participate in Media/Journalist related conferences, workshops or seminars etc.
– To engage in Meetings, Seminars, Conferences etc. with Political parties and/or groups
– To engage in activities carried out by NGOs or INGOs

Approval from the appropriate Sri Lanka Government authorities should be obtained if purpose of travel is any of the above mentioned.

Potential applicants may obtain the relevant visa by submitting proof of evidence [Ex. invitation issued by respective authority, agreements signed between parties etc.] from the closest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission or from the Visa Section of the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Colombo through counterpart in Colombo for the above purposes. Thai nationals holding Diplomatic / Official passport are exempted from the ETA processing fee and the ETA procedures for their official and private visits to Sri Lanka. A visit visa for not exceeding 90 days will be issued to them on arrival to Sri Lanka.

Through Sri Lanka Embassy
For short term visits limited up to 30 days travellers can apply online by themselves through ETA system or by physically submitting an application to the Sri Lanka Mission in the respective country.

For the purposes other than the short-termvisits travellers should submit visa applications to the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand, Ocean Tower II, 13th floor, No. 75/6-7, Sukumvit Soi 19, Bangkok 10110.

Necessary arrangement should be made by the applicant himself to collect the Passport after endorsement of Visa.

Important:
The Embassy reserves the right to refuse visa without assigning reasons. Before submitting Visa Application Form, please ensure all the fields of Visa Application Form are completely filled with correct information without typographical errors.

Granting or termination of visas is at the sole discretion of the Controller General, Department of Immigration and Emigration as per Section 14 of the Department of Immigration and Emigration Act No. 20 of 1948 and Department of Immigration and Emigration Regulations.

Tourist Visa

A Tourist Visa Purpose Visa is issued to foreign nationals who visit Sri Lanka for Tourist purposes

  • Meducal Treatment Including Ayurvedic (HERBAL)
  • Particapate in sporting events, Competitions and activites relating to cultural performance
  • Sightseeing or holidaying
  • Visiting Friendes and relatives

A tourist visa is issued to bona-fide tourists who want to enter Sri Lanka for a short period of time up to 03 months for sightseeing, holidaying, visiting friends and relatives,Medical treatment including Ayurvedic and Yoga,participate in sporting events and activities relating to cultural performance etc.

Travellers should not engage in any form of employment, paid or unpaid, or in any trade or business other than that specified in the visa during the period of stay in Sri Lanka.

Tourist visa must be utilized before the date of expiry noted on the visa.

Validity of visa is subject to entry into Sri Lanka during the indicated entry period.

  • Letter of invitation from Sri Lankan organizations/sponsors/authorities for group ofmore than 30 tourists
  • For children less than 16 years of age travel alone: In addition to above requirements must provide consent

letter from both parents, copy of parents’ marriage certificate, copies of parents passports

Business Visa

A Business Purpose Visa is issued to foreign nationals who visit Sri Lanka for business purposes

  • conferences workshop and seminars.
  • participate in art music and dance events.
  • participate in business meetings and negotiations.
  • participate in religious events.
  • participate in symposiums.
  • short term training progammes.

This visa may be issued for single, double or multiple entry journeys maximum up to three months and can be extended.

Required documents :

  • Duly filled Visa application form “  Download application form
  • Original Passport with more than 06 months validity from the intended date of arrival
  • 02 Photographs (Size 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm)
  • Copy ofround trip air ticket
  • For business purposes, letter of invitation or business agreement with counterpart in Sri Lanka.(This should be issued at least within 3 months before the application including recommendation, details of the status of the applicant, nature of business, duration of stay, availability of funds, details of the party in Sri Lanka.)

Entry Visa

Entry visa is issued to travellerswho wish to obtain residence visa to undertake an employment, business contract, investments, education, diplomatic assignment, religious engagement etc. which requires a long term stay as approved by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka. The counterpart in Sri Lanka should submit the visa application for the traveller to the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

Required documents :

  • Duly filled Visa application form “Download application form
  • Approval for Entry Visa from the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka
  • Original Passport with more than 06 months validity from the intended date of arrival
  • 02 Photographs (Size 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm)
  • Copy of air ticket
  • For employees, investors, business personnel, letter of invitation or business agreement with counterpart in Sri Lanka.( This should be issued at least within 3 months before the application including recommendation, details of the status of the applicant, nature of business, duration of stay, availability of funds, details of the party in Sri Lanka.)
  • For students, letter of acceptance and letter of agreement with the Higher Education Institute in Sri Lanka.
  • For Diplomats on assignments in Sri Lanka, a formal note (Note Verbale) from the respective government with the appointment letter.
  • For members of the Clergy, invitation and sponsorship letter from the counterpart in Sri Lanka.( This should be issued at least within 3 months before the application including recommendation, details of the status of the applicant, nature of engagement, duration of stay, availability of funds, accommodation, details of the party in Sri Lanka.)
  • For citizens other than Thai, need to submit a copy of Thai resident visa page and work permit for foreigners working in Thailand.

Residence Visa

A residence visa is a permit for a non-Sri Lankan to obtain residence facilities for special purposes. There are sub-categories which come under residence visas :

Apply for Resident Visa
In this case, the visa process should originate from Sri Lanka-end by the individual/institution who/which sponsor/facilitate the applicant. The concerned individual/institution in Sri Lanka should submit the application for residence visa on behalf of the applicant directly to the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

Once the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka approves the completed application form, the Sri Lanka Embassy will be authorized to issue entry visa (valid for 30 day) to the applicant. An entry visa allows one entry into the country and is valid for 30 days only. Upon arrival in Sri Lanka the applicant must visit/contact the Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka to obtain his/her residence visa.

Gratis Officell & Diplomatic

Foreign nationals intending to visit Sri Lanka for Diplomatic or Official purposes should be issued visa free of charge ( Gratis)

Required documents:

    Formal note [Note Verbale] from the respective government stating the purpose of visit
  • Invitation letter from the relevant authorities in Sri Lanka

The holder of a Diplomatic or Official Passport or a passport with a valid Diplomatic or Official endorsement will not be required to pay any fees for the visa.

If they are travelling for private purpose, issuance of ETA on gratis basis will be considered on the basis of reciprocity.

Thai Nationals with Diplomatic or Official passport are exempted from visa requirement to travel Sri Lanka for a stay less than 90 days.

Visa for Journalist & Filming Crew

Prior visas must be obtained by Journalists/media personnel who expect to visit Sri Lanka on an assignment. In addition to the visa application form, they are required to submit a list of equipment which they intend to take to Sri Lanka on the prescribed form. Journalists are advised to apply for visas well in advance, as the Embassy needs the clearance from the authorities in Colombo to issue visas for them.

Voluntary NGOs

Visa to work in a Voluntary capacity in Social Service Organizations/NGOs

All Voluntary Social Service Organizations/NGOs registered under the Voluntary Social Service Organizations Act No. 31 of 1980, who wish to obtain visas should submit their NGO/INGO registration certificate and MOU signed with the Government of Sri Lanka to the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Visa will only be processed for the organizations that fulfill the below requirement.

All foreign nationals who intend to work in NGO/INGO sector in Sri Lanka should apply for entry visa at the Department of Immigration and Emigration prior to travel.

Residence visas are issued by the Controller-General of Immigration and Emigration for foreign nationals holding entry visas on the recommendation of the Director of National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations, subject to a minimum period of one year, that can be extended. Foreign nationals travelling on tourist visas will not be able to obtain Residence visa.

The concerned individual/institution in Sri Lanka should submit the application for residence visa on behalf of the applicant directly to the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

Once the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka approves the completed application form, the Sri Lanka Embassy will be authorized to issue entry visa (valid for 30 day) to the applicant. An entry visa allows one entry into the country and is valid for 30 days only. Upon arrival in Sri Lanka the applicant must visit/contact the Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka to obtain his/her residence visa.

Foreign nationals intending to visit Sri Lanka for Diplomatic or Official purposes should be issued visa free of charge ( Gratis)

The holder of a Diplomatic or Official Passport or a passport with a valid Diplomatic or Official endorsement will not be required to pay any fees for the visa.

If they are travelling for private purpose, issuance of ETA on gratis basis will be considered on the basis of reciprocity.

Thai Nationals with Diplomatic or Official passport are exempted from visa requirement to travel Sri Lanka for a stay less than 90 days.

Visa for Journalist & Filming Crew

Prior visas must be obtained by Journalists/media personnel who expect to visit Sri Lanka on an assignment. In addition to the visa application form, they are required to submit a list of equipment which they intend to take to Sri Lanka on the prescribed form. Journalists are advised to apply for visas well in advance, as the Embassy needs the clearance from the authorities in Colombo to issue visas for them.

Voluntary NGOs

Visa to work in a Voluntary capacity in Social Service Organizations/NGOs

All Voluntary Social Service Organizations/NGOs registered under the Voluntary Social Service Organizations Act No. 31 of 1980, who wish to obtain visas should submit their NGO/INGO registration certificate and MOU signed with the Government of Sri Lanka to the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Visa will only be processed for the organizations that fulfill the below requirement.

All foreign nationals who intend to work in NGO/INGO sector in Sri Lanka should apply for entry visa at the Department of Immigration and Emigration prior to travel.

Residence visas are issued by the Controller-General of Immigration and Emigration for foreign nationals holding entry visas on the recommendation of the Director of National Secretariat for Non-Governmental Organizations, subject to a minimum period of one year, that can be extended. Foreign nationals travelling on tourist visas will not be able to obtain Residence visa.

Registration of Birth & Citizenship

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
An application for registration of a birth must be made within 03 months of the birth. If the application is made after 03 months, the reason for the delay should be given in writing when making the application.

  • The father or Mother of the child should be a citizen of Sri Lanka at the time of birth.
  • A child’s birth may be registered in Sinhala/Tamil/English. The preferred language should be indicated.
  • The father or mother of the child may make the application for registration of birth which should be made in duplicate.

To register the birth of a child born to Sri Lankan Nationals, the following three forms must be submitted.

  • Application for Registration of a Birth outside Sri Lanka. (Citizenship 1 Form).
  • Declaration of Birth under Section 16. (if within 03 months). (Registration B-4 Form)or Declaration of Birth Under Section 24. (Registration B-6 Form).
    (Applicants Signature should be notarized. Stamps are not necessary)
  • Declaration of Citizenship of the father as per specimen attached. (Signature should be notarized.)

These three forms should be submitted along with the originals of the following documents.

  • The Birth Certificate issued by the Competent Authority in the country of the birth of the child.
  • Passports of father and mother. (With proof of valid visa or Green Card)
  • Marriage Certificate of the parents.
  • Birth Certificates of father and mother (English translations will not be accepted as originals).

Registration of Marriage

One of the parties to the marriage should be a Sri Lankan Citizen and should give Notice of Marriage to the Embassy. (Forms are available at the Embassy).

The marriage may be registered in the Embassy after a lapse of twelve (12) working days from the date of receipt of the Notice of Marriage and within three (03) months from such date.

Valid passports of both parties should be produced.

Two (02) witnesses with photo identification documents should also be present.

Registration of Death

DECLARATION OF DEATH
has to be made by a close relative or friend or any other person who was with the deceased at the time of death.

The following documents are required for registering the death:a. Original Death Certificate issued by the relevant Authorities.

Coroner’s Report

Passport and other available identification documents of the deceased, to prove Sri Lankan Citizenship.

The Embassy charges a fee for the Registration of a death. Fees should be paid by Cash (only if application is hand delivered).

LANDING OF HUMAN REMAINS IN SRI LANKA
No Human corpse shall be landed in Sri Lanka unless such corpse has beena) embalmed and enclosed in a coffin of hard wood with a lead of zinc lining.

Packed in a coffin of hard wood with hermetically sealed lead or zinc lining with suitable disinfectants (such as chloride or line or zinc sulphate mixed with sawdust, filling the empty spaces within the coffin.

The following documents should be produced -a) Certificate from the health authority where the death occurred stating that the corpse has been embalmed or packed as required by para (1)

A certified copy of the certificate of registration of death issued by the registering authority of the placed where the death occurred, stating the date and cause of death.

A certificate from the relevant authorities of the place where the death occurred stating that the removal of the corpse from the place of death has been sanctioned by the said authorities. (Burial/Transit Permit)

A certificate from the diplomatic representative of the Government of Sri Lanka or the British Consul of the place from which such corpse has been dispatched, stating that the coffin in which such corpse is encased contains only the body of the deceased.

Where no diplomatic representative of the Government of Sri Lanka or British Consul is stationed at such place, proof to the satisfaction of the proper authority that the coffin in which such corpse is encased contains only the body of the deceased.

A certificate from the local health authority stating that the deceased did not die of quarantinable disease.

Passport of the deceased.

Coroner’s certificate (if death was not due to natural reasons)

Police Report (if death was not due to natural reasons)

where a vessel/aircraft arrives in Sri Lanka with the corpse of a person who has died during the voyage, or during the period that the vessel or aircraft remains in a port/airport in Sri Lanka, the master of the vessel/pilot shall,(a) Inform the proper authority of such fact.

Carry out all instructions given by the proper authority for the disposal of the body and for the cleansing and disinfection of the vessel or aircraft.

In order to bring human ashes to Sri Lanka,(a) Permission of the proper authorities should be obtained.

Such permission shall be granted only if the ashes are sealed in a metal container which is air-tight and water-tight.

Notice

Russia, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Armenia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Latvia, Georgia and Kazakhstan Nationals currently reside in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are allowed to enter Sri Lanka with Tourist ETA for the purpose tourist. Accordingly, ETA applicants are strictly advised to follow the instructions below. 1. Only the above nationals whose are currently residing in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan are allowed to apply for the visa. 2. It is strongly advised before requesting ETA permission, all applicants should consult with the airlines which have permission & approval for birth to Sri Lanka from those three countries and get directions and check the availability of the flights in advance to avoid unnecessary payments in official ETA site. 3. It will be Noticed the approval of ETA by an email and applicants who have obtained that ETA permit will be allowed to come to Sri Lanka only by approved carrier which is birth only from above three countries ,subject to the Government health quarantine procedures and Immigration & Emigration Regulations.
