The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok commemorated the 78th<\/sup><\/span> Anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka <\/b>with an official ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at the <\/b>Residence of the Ambassador, <\/b>with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community, distinguished guests, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and members of the diplomatic corps.<\/p>\n

The ceremony commenced by the <\/b>hoisting of the National Flag with the traditional beats of Magul Bera and the singing of the National Anthem of Sri Lanka. This was followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing unity, hope, and prosperity. A two-minute silence <\/b>was thereafter observed in solemn remembrance of all those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation\u2019s freedom and independence. Multi-religious observances were conducted by the Venerable members of the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian clergy, invoking blessings for peace, harmony, and prosperity for Sri Lanka and its people, in keeping with the country\u2019s rich religious and cultural diversity. <\/p>\n

The event was graced by Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, as the Chief Guest, reflecting the longstanding friendship and close cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand.<\/p>\n

Delivering remarks on the occasion, H.E. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand underscored the enduring significance of Independence Day as an occasion for reflection on Sri Lanka\u2019s journey as a sovereign nation, while reaffirming the country\u2019s commitment to democratic values, reconciliation, and sustainable development. The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of unity and resilience among Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad. <\/p>\n

National Day messages by H.E. the President, the Hon. Prime Minister, and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka <\/b>were read in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, symbolizing inclusivity and the shared national identity of all Sri Lankans.<\/p>\n

The ceremony concluded with a luncheon for the invitees, showcasing traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and an assortment of sweetmeats, providing an opportunity for guests and members of the Sri Lankan community to come together in a spirit of national pride and solidarity.<\/p>\n

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening Sri Lanka\u2013Thailand relations, anchored in longstanding cultural, religious, and people-to-people ties.<\/p>\n
