NEW PASSPORT
A Sri Lankan citizen can apply for a new passport through Diplomatic Mission, while he is in another country. The N-Series Passports currently issuing are valid for 10 years unless otherwise specified. Validity of a passport cannot be extended beyond 10 years from the date of issuance. A new passport must be obtained instead. Applicants are advised to apply for the new passports in advance with all required documents below. These applications are processed by the Overseas Missions Branch at Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, Colombo

NEW PASSPORT FOR MINOR (UNDER 16 YEARS)
If the applicant is a child under 16 years and / or applying the passport for the first time, the parents should submit the following documents. As per the new rules of Department of Immigration and Emigration, the validity period of the passports issued to applicants below age of 16 at the time of issuance of passport has been restricted for 3 years.
Note: If an applicant below age of 16 expects a passport of normal validity (10 years) parents need to make a written request.

PASSPORT FOR NEWBORN
Children born to Sri Lankan parents by descent or by registration can apply for a Sri Lankan Passport. At least one parent must be a Sri Lankan Citizen at the birth of the Child.

LOST/STOLEN PASSPORT
If your passport is lost or stolen, it is your responsibility to inform the concerned authorities’ immediately. Failure to do so may result in your lost or stolen passports being used for illegal activities and you may be liable for aiding and abetting an offence.
If you found your passport if lost/stolen immediately make a complaint to your local police station in the country of residence and obtain a Police report.

Submit the duly filled complaint form together with Police report to the Embassy of Sri Lanka.
Embassy of Sri Lanka shall transmit to the Immigration Department in Sri Lanka the details of the stolen or lost passports. Upon receipt of such information, Department will take necessary measures to cancel the stolen, lost or missing passport.
Passport reported lost or stolen can no longer be used for travel. The details of cancellation will be automatically shared worldwide to avoid misuse. Never use the lost or stolen passport again, even you find it later, after making a complaint. You are strongly advised to obtain a new passport immediately to avoid inconvenience.
If you find another person’s lost Sri Lankan passport, please mail it in a sturdy envelope to the address below.

ALTERATIONS TO THE PASSPORT

EMERGENCY PASSPORT (NMRP)
A Non Machine Readable Passport (NMRP) can be issued in lieu of a lost passport of a Sri Lankan national, ONLY to return to Sri Lanka.
However, if the Embassy has accepted an application in lieu of a passport which is expired or lost and the applicant required a Travel Document for Emergency Traveling ONLY to return to Sri Lanka, NMRP may issued as a stop gap travel document until the renewed passport is received.
NMRP is valid only for ONE month from the date of issue.

NMRP in lieu of lost passport 4950 THB

PROCEDURE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION
Applicant should submit the applications and documents in person visiting the Embassy and place signature before the consular officer in the Embassy when applicable.
However, if you are unable to visit Embassy, please contact Embassy officials for advice/instructions on case by case basis for submission of documents through currier/post or by an authorized third party.
