Travel Document (Passport)

Consular services to the public are provided under the terms of the Consular Functions Act No. 4 of 1981 of Sri Lanka
To be eligible to apply for a travel document, the applicant must be a Sri Lankan citizen by descent or by registration.

Travel Document (Passport)

NEW PASSPORT

A Sri Lankan citizen can apply for a new passport through Diplomatic Mission, while he is in another country. The N-Series Passports currently issuing are valid for 10 years unless otherwise specified. Validity of a passport cannot be extended beyond 10 years from the date of issuance. A new passport must be obtained instead. Applicants are advised to apply for the new passports in advance with all required documents below. These applications are processed by the Overseas Missions Branch at Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, Colombo

Documents Required:

  • Duly completed application form (Form ‘K’- 35 A). Fill the application using English Block Letters – (Download Application Here).
  • Original existing Sri Lankan Passport with valid visa to stay in the country of Residence
  • Three clear photographs of 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. (Please attach clear photographs with full front face, both ears visible, without covering face by hair and without spectacles. Photographs should be taken within 03 months. Photos should not be gloss or semi-gloss).
  • Original Birth Certificate (translations not accepted).
  • Original Sri Lanka National Identity Card (N.I.C) or driving license.
  • Original Marriage Certificate (only for female applicants if the surname of the husband should be included in the passport: Optional).(Original documents will be returned to the applicant upon verifying the authenticity)
  • Academic and Employment certificates (if the profession is needed to be included in the passport: optional).
  • Dual Citizenship certificate (if applicable)

Application Fee:  4950 THB

IMPORTANT:

All payments should be made through the Consular Counter only by cash (currency: THB) The Embassy does not accept payments made by cheques/credit/debit cards.

Please note that according to the financial regulations of Sri Lanka, the fee paid will NOT be refunded.

NEW PASSPORT FOR MINOR (UNDER 16 YEARS)

If the applicant is a child under 16 years and / or applying the passport for the first time, the parents should submit the following documents. As per the new rules of Department of Immigration and Emigration, the validity period of the passports issued to applicants below age of 16 at the time of issuance of passport has been restricted for 3 years.

Note: If an applicant below age of 16 expects a passport of normal validity (10 years) parents need to make a written request. 

Required Documents :

  • Duly completed application form (Form ‘K’- 35 A). Fill the application using English Block Letters – (Download Application Here).
  • Previous passport of the child (if already possess a passport or included in mother’s passport)
  • Written request signed by both parents indicating that both of them do not have any objection to issue an individual passport to the child. (Download declaration) (Signatures of both the parents should be included as same as in their passports with their passport numbers).
  • Copies of the National Identity Cards (NIC) of the Parents
  • Original Marriage Certificate of Parents
  • 03 clear photographs of 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. (Please attach clear photographs with full front face, both ears visible and without spectacles. Photographs should be taken within 03 months. Photos should not be gloss or semi-gloss.)
  • Originals of the Parents Passports together with 02 photocopies of each of the data page of the passports with alteration page if applicable and visa pages with valid visa to stay in the country of Residence.
  • Original Birth Certificate of the child (translations not accepted).
  • Citizenship certificate of the child or a copy of the payment receipt if the certificate (When Citizenship certificate is not issued at the time of application)
  • Dual Citizenship certificate (if applicable)(Original documents will be returned to the applicant upon verifying the authenticity)

Other Documents (If applicable)

  • If parents were separated, documents indicating legal guardianship of the child.
  • If one parent deceased, the death certificate of such parents.
  • If a legal guardian is applying, proof documentations regarding guardianship.

PASSPORT FOR NEWBORN

Children born to Sri Lankan parents by descent or by registration can apply for a Sri Lankan Passport. At least one parent must be a Sri Lankan Citizen at the birth of the Child.

As per the new rules of Department of Immigration and Emigration, the validity period of the passports issued to applicants below age of 16 at the time of issuance of passport has been restricted for 3 years.

  • Resident Permit Card or letter issued by the Immigration Authority of the Country of Residence indicating the status and category of parent’s visa.
  • Original Birth Certificate of the child (translations not accepted).
  • Citizenship certificate of the child or a copy of the payment receipt if the Citizenship certificate (If the citizenship certificate is not issued at the time of application).
  • Dual Citizenship certificate (if applicable)

         (Original documents will be returned to the applicant upon verifying the authenticity)

Other Documents (If applicable) :
  • If parents were separated, documents indicating legal guardianship of the child.
  • If one parent deceased, the death certificate of such parents.
  • If a legal guardian is applying, proof documentations regarding guardianship.

Fee :

4950 THB (valid for 10 years)
3955 THB (restricted to 3 years)

LOST/STOLEN PASSPORT

If your passport is lost or stolen, it is your responsibility to inform the concerned authorities’ immediately. Failure to do so may result in your lost or stolen passports being used for illegal activities and you may be liable for aiding and abetting an offence.

Important

If you found your passport if lost/stolen immediately make a complaint to your local police station in the country of residence and obtain a Police report.

Submit the duly filled complaint form together with Police report to the Embassy of Sri Lanka.

Embassy of Sri Lanka shall transmit to the Immigration Department in Sri Lanka the details of the stolen or lost passports. Upon receipt of such information, Department will take necessary measures to cancel the stolen, lost or missing passport.

Passport reported lost or stolen can no longer be used for travel. The details of cancellation will be automatically shared worldwide to avoid misuse. Never use the lost or stolen passport again, even you find it later, after making a complaint. You are strongly advised to obtain a new passport immediately to avoid inconvenience.

If you find another person’s lost Sri Lankan passport, please mail it in a sturdy envelope to the address below.

Documents Required:
  • Dully filled complaint of lost /stolen Passport
  • Duly completed application form (Form ‘K’- 35 A). Fill the application using English Block Letters – (Download Application Here).
  • Original Police Report issued by the local police regarding the lost passport. (Original will be returned after verifying )
  • Photocopy of Previous Sri Lankan Passport (If available)
  • Three clear photographs of 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. (Please attach clear photographs with full front face, both ears visible, without covering face by hair and without spectacles. Photographs should be taken within 03 months. Photos should not be gloss or semi-gloss.)
  • Original Birth Certificate (translations not accepted).
  • Original Sri Lanka National Identity Card (N.I.C) or driving license.
  • Original Marriage Certificate (only for female applicants if the surname of the husband should be included in the passport: Optional).
  • Academic and Employment certificates (if the profession is needed to be included in the passport: optional).

ALTERATIONS TO THE PASSPORT

A Sri Lankan passport holder may apply for amendments of the data included in his/her passport and if the request is accepted by the Department, all such amendments will be included in the observation and alterations page.

Documents Required:

  • Duly completed application form (Form ‘O’). Fill the application using English Block Letters – (Download Application Here).
  • Original Sri Lankan Passport
  • Documentary evidence to prove the accuracy of the alteration or amendment
  • Valid visa of the current country of residence

Fee:  330 THB

EMERGENCY PASSPORT (NMRP)

A Non Machine Readable Passport (NMRP) can be issued in lieu of a lost passport of a Sri Lankan national, ONLY to return to Sri Lanka.

However, if the Embassy has accepted an application in lieu of a passport which is expired or lost and the applicant required a Travel Document for Emergency Traveling ONLY to return to Sri Lanka, NMRP may issued as a stop gap travel document until the renewed passport is received.

NMRP is valid only for ONE month from the date of issue.

Required Documents :
  • Follow the instructions (See here) to report the lost /stolen Passport and obtain required receipts / reports.
  • Duly completed application form (Form ‘K’- 35 A). Fill the application using English Block Letters – (Download Application Here).
  • Statement made by the applicant regarding the loss of passport
  • Original Police Report issued by the local police if regarding the lost passport.
  • Photocopy of Lost Sri Lankan Passport (If available)
  • Three clear photographs of 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. (Please attach clear photographs with full front face, both ears visible, without covering face by hair and without spectacles. Photographs should be taken within 03 months. Photos should not be gloss or semi-gloss.)
  • Original Birth Certificate (translations not accepted).
  • Original Sri Lanka National Identity Card (N.I.C) or driving license.

(Original documents will be returned to the applicant upon verifying the authenticity)

                                NMRP in lieu of lost passport      4950 THB

PROCEDURE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION

Applicant should submit the applications and documents in person visiting the Embassy and place signature before the consular officer in the Embassy when applicable.

However, if you are unable to visit Embassy, please contact Embassy officials for advice/instructions on case by case basis for submission of documents through currier/post or by an authorized third party.

You may submit the application to the Consular Division of the Embassy by hand. Consular Division is open from Monday to Friday except holidays
