Strengthening Buddhist Relations: Temporary Ordination Programme for Sri Lankans Marks 70 Years of Sri Lanka–Thailand Diplomacy

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok held two productive meetings with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) as part of its ongoing preparations to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Sri Lanka showcased strong commitment to sustainable financing at the Fifth Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development held in Bangkok.
The Fifth Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development was held from 19-21 November 2025 at the Unite Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Session was opened by Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). During the opening session, special remarks were made by H.E. Ahmed Mazin, Minister of State for
Finance and Planning of Maldives, Mr. Benjarong Suwankiri, Vice-Minister of Finance of Thailand and the Secretary-General of UNCTAD. The meeting brought together key member States,
including Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Maldives, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Türkiye, the United States of America, and Viet Nam, reflecting strong regional engagement in advancing inclusive and sustainable development financing.
A three-month Temporary Ordination Programme for 33 Sri Lankans was organized on 7 July 2025 at Wat Dhammamongkol Temple, Sukhumvit, Bangkok. The initiative was led by Ven. Namaldeniye Maha Dhammasumana Thero, in close collaboration with the temple and with the support of the Thai devotees. The special programme is part of the ongoing commemorative events marking the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand, which are rooted in the shared heritage of Theravāda Buddhism.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, attended the event as the Chief Guest, accompanied by members of the Embassy staff.
In her address, Ambassador Edirisinghe highlighted the deeply rooted Buddhist ties between Sri Lanka and Thailand, emphasizing that such programmes not only strengthen religious and cultural bonds, but also provide Sri Lankans with a meaningful spiritual experience. She expressed appreciation to Wat Dhammamongkol Temple, Sukhumvit and Thai devotees for organizing the programme and extended the Embassy’s fullest support and cooperation for its continued success.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka remains committed to fostering religious, cultural exchanges and people-to-people contacts that enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
