Sri Lanka Glows on the Global Stage at the 14th Celebration of Thai Silk

Sri Lanka added colour to Thailand’s most anticipated fashion and cultural showcase, the 14th Celebration of Silk: Thai Silk Road to the World, held on 21 June 2025 at the Royal Thai Navy Convention Hall in Bangkok. The event was presided over by the Minister of Culture of Thailand, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol and organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with several Thai government agencies and cultural organizations.

The event brought together Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from over 88 countries. Sri Lanka was proudly represented by Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP Wijayanthi Edirisinghe.

The Celebration of Silk is Thailand’s largest annual Thai silk event, showcasing the beauty and richness of traditional Thai silk while promoting cultural exchange on an international stage. This year’s celebration carried special significance as it honoured the 47th birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana.

Sri Lanka proudly showcased its traditional costume made from exquisite Thai silk, reflecting the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, graced the runway as an honorary model, joining fellow Ambassadors on stage in a spectacular fashion segment that was broadcast globally through Fashion TV. The Thai silk attire worn by Ambassador Edirisinghe was specially designed by students from the Pak Thong Chai Technical College, preserving traditional Thai craftsmanship. The design captured both elegance and Sri Lankan national identity, symbolizing the harmony between Thai artistry and Sri Lanka’s cultural spirit.

Originally initiated in 1976 by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Thai Silk Road to the World project was designed to support and promote Thailand’s traditional silk industry and foster cultural ties between Thailand and the international community. Over the years, it has evolved into Thailand’s grandest fashion and cultural showcase, highlighting the creativity and heritage of participating nations through unique national costumes and designs created using exquisite Thai silk.

Sri Lanka’s participation in this cultural diplomacy initiative underscores the strong bonds of friendship and shared heritage between Sri Lanka and Thailand, especially rooted in their deep ties through longstanding cultural cooperation.
