The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand & Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, attended the prestigious event titled “GI Thailand: The Way of the Land, Preserving Local Heritage for Global Recognition,” organized by the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand on Saturday, 21 March 2026, at Baan Dusit Thani, Bangkok.

Under the gracious patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, the event gathered a distinguished audience comprising members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, and representatives from diverse sectors, including the Minister of Commerce, Suphajee Suthumpun, and the Permanent Secretary of Commerce, Vuttikrai Leewiraphan.

The programme highlighted the importance of Geographical Indications (GI) in preserving local heritage, promoting sustainable development, and enhancing the global recognition of unique regional products. The exhibition showcased a diverse range of Thai GI-certified products, while interactive craft workshops provided insights into traditional knowledge and craftsmanship. The evening concluded with a reception featuring refreshments prepared using authentic Thai GI ingredients.

The participation of the Sri Lankan Ambassador reflected Sri Lanka’s continued interest in strengthening cooperation with Thailand in the field of intellectual property, particularly in promoting and protecting Geographical Indications. Sri Lanka, with its rich heritage of world-renowned GI products such as Ceylon Tea, Cinnamon, and other region-specific specialties, recognizes the importance of GI as a valuable tool for rural development and cultural preservation.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok looks forward to further enhancing collaboration with Thailand in this important sector, fostering mutual exchange of knowledge and best practices.
