Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets Director General of Thailand’s Department of Business Development to Discuss Bilateral Economic Collaboration

15 Sri Lankans Rescued from Cybercrime Centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar to be Repatriated on 07 May 2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, in close coordination with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Myanmar, has successfully facilitated the rescue of 15 Sri Lankan nationals who had been trafficked and forcibly employed in cybercrime centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar on 06th May 2025. The rescued individuals are scheduled to be repatriated to Sri Lanka on 07 May 2025.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, met with the Director General of the Department of Business Development (DBD) under the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, Auramon Supthaweethum, on 08th April 2025 to explore opportunities for deepening bilateral trade and business cooperation.
The Department of Business Development is a key government agency responsible for regulating, supporting, and promoting business operations in Thailand. Its core functions include the registration of business entities such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited companies, and foreign business operations. The DBD also maintains Thailand’s official Business Registration Database and provides essential training, advisory services, and market access tools to support SMEs and startups.
During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe appreciated the long-standing and cordial bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, which is underpinned by shared cultural, religious, and trade ties. She acknowledged Thailand’s pivotal role in promoting regional economic integration and expressed Sri Lanka’s keen interest in deepening economic engagement between the two countries.
In response, Director General Auramon Supthaweethum welcomed the initiative and extended Thailand’s support to Sri Lankan businesses seeking to establish operations in Thailand. She assured that the DBD would facilitate the business registration process for Sri Lankan companies and offered to organize training programmes for Sri Lankan SMEs, focusing on market access, business development, and promotional strategies.
This meeting marks another step forward in enhancing economic collaboration between Sri Lanka and Thailand and reflects the shared commitment to harnessing regional trade opportunities for mutual benefit.
