The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), successfully co-hosted the International Conference on the Global Partnership against Online Scams in Bangkok, Thailand. The Conference aimed to strengthen and complement ongoing regional and international efforts to combat online scams and to enhance global cooperation to address existing operational gaps in tackling this complex form of transnational crime. The event brought together over 300 participants from 60 countries, including ministerial-level representatives, senior officials, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society.

The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, participated in the 421st Session of the Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives (ACPR) held at the United Nations premises in Bangkok. The Ambassador was invited to chair the final ACPR session of the year, reflecting Sri Lanka’s active and constructive engagement with the UN system in the region.

Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok Celebrates Deepavali Festival 2025 with Devotion, Unity, and Cultural Splendour

The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok celebrated the Deepavali Festival 2025 with a vibrant and spiritually uplifting ceremony at the Embassy premises on Friday, 24 October 2025.

The event began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the victory of good over evil. Kurukkals from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Bangkok conducted the Hindu pooja and rituals, invoking blessings for peace, prosperity, and well-being for all.

Her Excellency Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, in her welcome remarks, extended warm Deepavali greetings to all attendees and expressed gratitude to the Kurukkals for their blessings. She highlighted Deepavali as a celebration of light, knowledge, and righteousness, reflecting universal values of compassion, forgiveness, and unity that transcend faith. The Ambassador also emphasized the festival’s significance in Sri Lanka’s multicultural society and its role in strengthening communal harmony and friendship between Sri Lanka and Thailand.

In her remarks, the Ambassador also shared the Deepavali message of H E the President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who described the festival as a celebration of the triumph of righteousness and light over darkness. She added that, as the President emphasized, the Government continues to address all national challenges while ensuring the safety and well-being of citizens. Quoting the President’s call for unity and social justice, the Ambassador reiterated his appeal for all Sri Lankans to overcome religious and ethnic extremism and to work together toward “a thriving nation and a beautiful life.”

A significant number of members of the Sri Lankan Tamil community in Thailand attended the celebration, joining in the rituals and festive cheer. Among the invitees were officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, members of the Thai–Sri Lanka Business Chamber, representatives of the Thai business community, members of the Sri Lanka Association in Bangkok, and members of the Sri Lanka Students’ Association in Bangkok, reflecting the close bonds between the two nations and their communities.

The Embassy staff presented two devotional songs praising Lord Krishna, while guests enjoyed traditional Tamil sweets, food, and Ceylon Tea, reflecting Sri Lanka’s renowned hospitality.

The Deepavali celebration served as a meaningful occasion to promote cultural harmony and togetherness among the Sri Lankan community in Thailand and to celebrate Sri Lanka’s enduring respect for its multi-religious and multicultural heritage.
