The family proudly showcased costumes inspired by traditional Sri Lankan attire and crafted from Thai silk by students of Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of Sri Lanka through a creative fusion with Thailand’s renowned silk craftsmanship.

Ambassador Edirisinghe also served as a member of the Organizing Committee of the 15th Celebration of Silk: Thai Silk Road to the World, reflecting Sri Lanka’s active engagement in this prestigious cultural event, which promotes cultural diplomacy and strengthens friendship and mutual understanding between Thailand and the international community.

The event was officially inaugurated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul and brought together members of the Thai Cabinet, senior government officials, diplomats and their spouses from 72 embassies, representing countries from around the world. The fashion showcase featured participants wearing elegant Thai silk creations and traditional national costumes, reflecting cultural diversity and international friendship.

Organized annually in honour of Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana on the occasion of Her Majesty’s Birthday Anniversary, the event also pays tribute to the enduring legacy of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, whose royal initiatives played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Thai silk weaving and supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities throughout Thailand.

The Sri Lankan costumes, designed by students of Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University, thoughtfully incorporated elements of traditional Sri Lankan attires and cultural themes while utilizing exquisite Thai silk fabrics. The designs symbolized the close cultural attraction and longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, both nations with rich textile traditions and shared Buddhist heritage.

The 15th Celebration of Silk: Thai Silk Road to the World serves as an important platform for promoting cultural diplomacy, fostering people-to-people exchanges, and showcasing the artistic talents of students from educational institutions across Thailand. In addition to the diplomatic fashion showcase, the event features an exhibition open to the public from 9–14 June 2026, displaying more than 250 silk garments designed by students from universities and institutions nationwide.

Sri Lanka’s participation in the event underscored the importance the country places on cultural engagement as a means of strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing mutual understanding between the peoples of Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok conveys its appreciation to the organizers and Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University for their efforts in promoting cultural exchange through this unique and prestigious event.
