The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka with elegance and national pride on 23rd February 2026 at the prestigious Hyatt Regency Bangkok.

The celebration was graced by Hon. Sunil Handunneththi, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development of Sri Lanka, and Hon. Sabeeda Thaised, Minister of Culture of Thailand, as Chief Guests. The event brought together distinguished representatives of the Royal Thai Government, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, members of the Sri Lankan community, and friends of Sri Lanka in Thailand.

Delivering the Welcome Remarks, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, H.E Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, reflected on the profound significance of Independence Day as a moment of remembrance, resilience, and renewed commitment to national progress. She highlighted Sri Lanka’s steady economic recovery, the Government’s reform agenda, and the vision of building “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life” under the leadership of H.E the President Anura Kumara Disanayake. The Ambassador underscored the enduring friendship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, rooted in centuries-old Theravada Buddhist ties and strengthened through expanding cooperation in trade, tourism, culture, and multilateral engagement. She expressed deep appreciation for Thailand’s solidarity and support during recent challenges faced by Sri Lanka, reaffirming the shared commitment to further elevate bilateral relations in the years ahead.

In his address, Minister Sunil Handunneththi paid tribute to the unity and sacrifice of all communities that secured Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948. He emphasized that independence is a continuing responsibility to build a strong, stable, and developed nation driven by innovation and entrepreneurship. Highlighting Sri Lanka’s renewed economic direction, the Minister noted that strengthening industry, empowering entrepreneurs, and expanding export-oriented growth are central pillars of the country’s development strategy. He invited Thai businesses and investors to participate in Sri Lanka Expo 2026, scheduled to be held in Colombo from 18–21 June 2026, as a platform to deepen trade and investment partnerships across manufacturing, agribusiness, renewable energy, logistics, and technology sectors.

In her remarks, Minister Sabeeda Thaised extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the Royal Thai Government and reaffirmed Thailand’s view of Sri Lanka as a key partner in South Asia. She recalled the celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries and highlighted expanding cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and regional frameworks including BIMSTEC, the Asia Cooperation Dialogue, and the Colombo Plan.Minister Thaised also acknowledged Sri Lanka’s resilience in overcoming recent natural disasters and reiterated Thailand’s commitment to continued cooperation and cultural connectivity.

The evening was made vibrant and memorable by a captivating performance by the Sri Lanka Air Force dance troupe, whose presentation seamlessly blended traditional Kandyan, and Southern dance with modern choreography, earning resounding appreciation from the audience.

Guests were also treated to visually stunning video presentations showcasing the breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, lush tea plantations, rich biodiversity, and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s most enchanting travel destinations.

Adding a delightful culinary dimension to the celebration, live food stations served authentic Sri Lankan favourites, including freshly prepared hoppers, kottu, and spicy chickpeas, offering guests a flavourful journey through Sri Lanka’s rich gastronomic traditions.

Among the distinguished dignitaries representing the Government of Thailand was Hon. Chulamanee Chartsuwan, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr.Nalinee Taveesin, President of Thailand Trade Representative, The Prime Minister’s Office. Hon. Chawanin Wongsatitjirakan, Governor of Ayutthaya.

The 78th National Independence Day celebration in Bangkok not only honoured Sri Lanka’s proud history and resilient spirit but also reaffirmed the strong and enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and Thailand. The event reflected Sri Lanka’s forward-looking vision — confident, united, and committed to sustainable growth, regional cooperation, and shared prosperity.
