Sri Lankan School Chess Players Shine at the 18th Asian School Chess Championships in Bangkok
Sri Lankan Automobile Component Manufacturers Explore Opportunities in Thailand
A 12-member delegation of Sri Lankan automobile component manufacturers successfully concluded a week-long exposure visit to Bangkok from 30th November to 6th December 2024. The visit was jointly organized by the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the Thai-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce. Its primary objective was to enhance the delegation’s understanding of Thailand’s advanced automotive sector and to foster meaningful business collaborations between the two countries.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets Secretary General of Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC)
Ambassador of Sri Lanka and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, held a productive meeting with the Secretary General of the National Economic and Social Development Council of Thailand, Danucha Pichayanan on 09th December 2024. The NESDC, as the primary planning and advisory body of the Thai Government, plays a pivotal role in shaping Thailand’s economic and social policies through its five-year National Economic and Social Development Plans. The current plan (2023-2027) emphasizes sustainable development, poverty reduction, income distribution, and strategic economic growth.
Sri Lankan students showcased their exceptional chess skills at the 18th Asian School Chess Championships, held from 1st to 11th December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event, co-organized by the Thailand Chess Association under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), saw participation from 32 countries across Asia.
A total of 67 young Sri Lankan chess players, representing various parts of the country, competed in multiple age categories. Their outstanding performances earned them two silver medals and three bronze medals, underscoring the talent and promise of Sri Lanka’s young chess community.
E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, was present at the event to support the players and ceremonially opened the games. In addition, the Ambassador met with the parents of the players, offering her congratulations and support, and she graced the prize-giving ceremony, where the medal winners were recognized for their remarkable achievements.
Ambassador commended the dedication and hard work of the players and their coaches. She also took the opportunity to express her appreciation for the unwavering commitment of Luxman Wijesuriya, the President of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. Ambassador highlighted his leadership and tireless efforts continue to inspire young players across the country.
The 67-member Sri Lankan team consisted of students from all corners of the country, demonstrating the widespread passion for chess across Sri Lanka. Their success at this prestigious event further strengthens Sri Lanka’s position as a rising force in the world of competitive chess.
