The 2nd anniversary of the Herostone (Nadukal) was commemorated at Wat Thaworn Wararam, honoring the tens of thousands of Asian civilian forced laborers who perished during the construction of the Burma Railway construction, also known as the Thai-Burma “Death Railway,” during World War II.
Symbol of Faith and Friendship: Buddha Statue Gifted to Sri Lanka by Thai Devotees
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok is pleased to announce the ceremonial handover of a seven-foot-tall Buddha statue to the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, at Wat Hatainaresh Temple.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand recently facilitated the visit of a 21 member production team from Thai AirAsia, including two renowned Thai YouTubers, Kongkapan Sangsuriya and Saksit Tangthong to Sri Lanka to promote Buddhist pilgrimage tourism. This initiative aims to highlight the deep historical and religious connections between Sri Lanka and Thailand, while showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage to Thai travelers.
The program, which broadcasted on Thailand’s Channel 7 HD TV and the YouTubers’ channels, reached a wide audience in Thailand, educating viewers about the shared Buddhist ties between the two countries. This is expected to further strengthen religious tourism and attract more Thai visitors to Sri Lanka’s revered Buddhist sites.
During their visit, the team explored several iconic religious and cultural landmarks in Sri Lanka, including, Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya, Mihinthale, Dambulla Cave Temple, Alu Viharaya in Matale, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya and Deepaduttarama Raja Maha Viharaya.
This initiative not only emphasizes the importance of religious tourism but also helps forge deeper connections between the people of Thailand and Sri Lanka through their shared Buddhist heritage.
