Sri Lankan students showcased their exceptional chess skills at the 18th Asian School Chess Championships, held from 1st to 11th December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event, co-organized by the Thailand Chess Association under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), saw participation from 32 countries across Asia.
Sri Lankan Automobile Component Manufacturers Explore Opportunities in Thailand
A 12-member delegation of Sri Lankan automobile component manufacturers successfully concluded a week-long exposure visit to Bangkok from 30th November to 6th December 2024. The visit was jointly organized by the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the Thai-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce. Its primary objective was to enhance the delegation’s understanding of Thailand’s advanced automotive sector and to foster meaningful business collaborations between the two countries.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe held a productive discussion with the Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand, Sanan Angubolkul on 01 October 2024. The discussion focused on enhancing the long-standing relationship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, particularly in the areas of trade, investment and tourism.
During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe emphasised the strong bilateral relationship and emphasized the importance of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement, set to take effect on 01 January 2025, as a key opportunity to strengthen economic cooperation. She invited the Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand to lead an investment delegation to Sri Lanka to explore the abundant opportunities available.
In response, Chairman Angubolkul expressed keen interest in Sri Lanka’s growing potential and confirmed that the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand would arrange a high level delegation visit to Sri Lanka in early next year (2025). He highlighted the successful visit of the delegation led by him to Sri Lanka in June 2024 for the International Industry Expo-2024 and the MoU signed with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, which provided valuable insights into trade, investment and tourism prospects.
Further enhancing bilateral cooperation, the Ambassador Edirisinghe also highlighted the upcoming visit of the business delegation from the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce to Bangkok in October 2024. The Ambassador requested the continued assistance of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade of Thailand in facilitating the visit of the delegation, underscoring the importance of collaboration in furthering mutual trade and investment.
This meeting highlighted significant opportunities through partnership between Sri Lanka and Thailand, as both nations work towards fostering greater economic cooperation and mutual prosperity. Advisor, Board of Trade of Thailand and Vice Chairman of the Committee on South Asia, Middle East and Africa Susheel Kumar Saraff, Vice Chairman of the Committee on South Asia, Middle East and Africa Songsamg Patavanich, Director of the Committee on South Asia, Middle East and Africa Jarudol Tulayakijja, Vice President of the Thai-Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce Sanjeewa Ediri Wickramasuriya and Counsellor (Commercial) of the Embassy Vireshika Bandara joined the discussion.
