Strengthening Agricultural Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Laos

15 Sri Lankans Rescued from Cybercrime Centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar to be Repatriated on 07 May 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, in close coordination with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Myanmar, has successfully facilitated the rescue of 15 Sri Lankan nationals who had been trafficked and forcibly employed in cybercrime centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar on 06th May 2025. The rescued individuals are scheduled to be repatriated to Sri Lanka on 07 May 2025.

Strengthening Agricultural Cooperation between Sri Lanka and Laos

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Laos, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, recently met with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos, Linkham Duangsavanh to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector.

During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe shared Sri Lanka’s expertise in agriculture, particularly in the areas of tea, spices and horticulture and explored possibilities for sharing best practices in sustainable agriculture, organic farming, and agro-technology.

The discussion also covered opportunities for technical exchanges, capacity-building programs, and knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable and modern agricultural practices. Ambassador Edirisinghe emphasized the potential to enhance bilateral trade in agricultural products, including promoting Ceylon tea in the Lao market.

The Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Laos expressed his appreciation for Sri Lanka’s commitment to agricultural cooperation and welcomed initiatives aimed at knowledge sharing and capacity building. He noted that Laos is keen to learn from Sri Lanka’s successful experiences in sustainable agriculture and organic farming.

Both sides agreed to continue working closely to strengthen agricultural ties and explore collaborative opportunities that would benefit both countries.
