Sri Lanka is participating in the 82nd Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), being held in Bangkok, Thailand from 20 to 24 April 2026, under the theme “Advancing Societies for All Ages in Asia and the Pacific.”
A historic religious and cultural event took place in Thailand as a group of 50 Sri Lankan women visited the Kingdom to undertake the temporary observation of the Ten Precepts (Dasa-Sila), marking one of the first occasions in the recent past that a women’s group from Sri Lanka has participated in such a spiritual programme in Thailand.
The ceremony was held on 08 March 2026, in celebration of International Women’s Day, under the guidance of most Ven. Phrasamu Pairoj Obhaso Thero, the Chief Incumbent of the renowned Wat Dhammamongkol Temple, Bangkok. The event was attended by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, highlighting the importance of spiritual exchange and the longstanding religious and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The programme provided a unique opportunity for the Sri Lankan participants to experience Thailand’s long-standing Buddhist monastic traditions and deepen their spiritual practice while observing the Ten Precepts.
Following the ceremony, the group travelled to Wat Pa Somdej Phra Yanavachirodom, located in the tranquil surroundings of Chiang Mai Province. There, the participants will spend 49 days (seven weeks) learning and practicing Buddhist meditation under the guidance of resident monks, further enriching their spiritual journey.
This visit represents a significant step in strengthening the religious and cultural connections between Sri Lanka and Thailand, two nations deeply rooted in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation to the Thai monastic community for facilitating this meaningful programme.
The Embassy noted that such exchanges contribute significantly to enhancing people-to-people ties and spiritual cooperation between the two countries.
