Sri Lanka and Thailand Strengthen Educational Ties During Ministerial Visit

As part of his official visit to Thailand, Hon. Dr. Upali Pannilage, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment of Sri Lanka, led a delegation to meet with Associate Professor Khunying Sumonta Promboon, President and the academic staff of the Chitralada Technology Institute, on 22 April 2026.

The delegation included Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand and Permanent Representative to the UNESCAP, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, along with officials of the Sri Lankan Mission in Bangkok.

During the meeting, discussions focused on Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy and its application in education, with particular emphasis on innovative agriculture, Industrial technology, business administration & digital technology and vocational/technical areas. Minister Upali Pannilage highlighted Sri Lanka’s priorities in rural development, community empowerment, and skills-based education, expressing interest in adapting relevant aspects of this model.

In her remarks, Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe emphasized the importance of strengthening educational cooperation and institutional partnerships between Sri Lanka and Thailand, noting their role in advancing sustainable development and regional collaboration.

The delegation also visited the Chitralada Technology Institute to gain insights into its academic programmes and training facilities. The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to enhancing cooperation in education and sustainable development.
