The Stamford International University, Phetchaburi Campus, hosted a distinguished forum to mark International Women’s Day 2026, bringing together leading women diplomats, academics, and over 200 participants for an engaging exchange on the evolving role of women in global leadership and diplomacy.
ශ්රී සම්බුද්ධ ධර්මය රැගෙන වැඩම කළ අනුබුදු මිහිඳු මහරහතන් වහන්සේගේ ලංකාගමනය සිහිපත් කරමින් මහත් ශ්රද්ධා භක්තියෙන් යුක්තව ආමිස හා ප්රතිපත්ති පූජාවෙහි නිරත වීම අප රටේ බොදු ජනයා වසර දහස් ගණනක සිට සිරිතක් කොට ගෙන සිටිති. ඒ උන්වහන්සේගේ ආගමනය ශ්රී ලංකාද්වීපයෙහි ආගමික, සංස්කෘතික, සාමාජයීය, දේශපාලනික ආදී සෑම අංශයකින්ම ශිෂ්ටාචාරමය පරිවර්තනයකට හේතු වූ නිසාය.
සහශ්රක දෙකකටත් වඩා අතීතයට දිවෙන, මිහිඳු මහරහතන් වහන්සේ සහ එකල අපේ නරපතියා වූ දේවානම්පිය තිස්ස රජු අතර හමුව ශ්රී ලාංකේය ඉතිහාසයේ සුවිශේෂීම සංසිද්ධියයි. අපේ සමාජ වටිනාකම්, ආර්ථිකය, සාහිත්යය, කලාව හා ශිල්ප ක්රම පවා මහින්දාගමනය තුළින් අලුත් මගක් ගත්තේය. අහස උසට නිමැවුණු දාගැබ් ද, මහසයුර සදිසි මහවැව් ද, රට ස්වයං පෝෂිත කළ කෙත්වතු ද, ලොව මවිත කළ අද්විතීය කලා නිර්මාණයන් ද, ඒ සියල්ලටම වඩා අටලෝ දහමින් අකම්පිත, ගහකොල සතාසීපාවාට පවා සාධාරණය ඉටුකළ, අපිස් බව ජීවන ප්රවෘත්ති කරගත්, සිවු බඹවිහරණ ලෙහි දරාගත් ලාංකික බොදුනුවා ද බිහිවන්නේ මේ සමාජ සංස්කෘතික විප්ලවයත් සමග ය.
අභිමානවත් රටක්, ජාතියක් ලෙස අප ඉදිරියට පැමිණියේ මිහිඳු හිමි දෙසූ දහම හා අනුදැන වදාළ ජීවන මග ඔස්සේය. දෙලොව යහපත පිණිස සබුද්ධිකව ක්රියා කරන ශිෂ්ටසම්පන්න සමාජයක් බිහිකිරීමට ද ඒ දහම ඉවහල් විය. එබැවින්, අතීතයට පමණක් නොව අනාගතයට ද අප රටක් ලෙස ලද වටිනාම දායාදය වන බුදුදහම අපට උරුම වූ උතුම් දිනය පොසොන් පුර පසළොස්වක පොහොය ලෙස සෑම හදවතකම ලියැවී තිබේ.
අප සෞභාග්යවත් දේශයක් කරා රට මෙහෙය වන්නේ අතීතයෙන් ලද අත්දැකීම්වලට හා බුදුදහමෙන් ලද ආභාෂයට අනුගතව ය. සැමට සාධාරණය ඉටුවනුයේ ආධ්යාත්මික ගුණ වගාවෙන් පිරිපුන්, විනයගරුක හා සමෘද්ධිමත් සමාජයක බව මගේ විශ්වාසය යි. මගේ රජය වර්තමානයට පමණක් නොව අනාගතයට ද සැලසුම් ක්රියාත්මක කරන්නේ එකී පදනම මත පිහිටා බව කිව යුතුය. රට වර්තමානයේ මුහුණ දී ඇති වසංගතය හමුවේ වුවද අප, ශිෂ්ටාචාරගත පදනම වූ ඒ දර්ශනයෙන් බැහැර වූයේ නැත. යථෝක්ත පදනමෙන් තොර ගමනක් ශ්රී ලාංකිකයන් වන අපට නොමැත.
එළැඹ ඇති මෙවර පොසොන් සමය සමාජය හා ජීවිතය දෙස තථාගත දහමට අනුගතව යථාර්ථවාදීව බැලීමට හා අවිහිංසාවාදී බුදුදහමේ ප්රභාව ලොවට හෙළි කිරීමට අවස්ථාව කර ගැනීම අනුබුදු මිහිඳු මාහිමියන්ට කළ හැකි වටිනාම උපහාරය බව මගේ හැඟීමයි.

இலங்கை தேசத்திற்கு பௌத்த சமயத்தின் செய்தியை சுமந்து வந்த அரஹத் மகிந்த தேரரின் வருகையை நினைவுகூர்ந்து மிகுந்த பக்தியுடன் சமயக் கிரியைகளில் ஈடுபடுவது எமது நாட்டு மக்கள் பல்லாயிரம் வருடங்களாக பேணி வரும் வழக்கமாகும். தேரர் அவர்களின் வருகை இலங்கைத் தீவில் சமயம், கலாசாரம், சமூக மற்றும் அரசியல் ஆகிய அனைத்து துறைகளிலும் பண்பாட்டு ரீதியான மாற்றத்திற்கு அடித்தளமாக அமைந்தது.
இற்றைக்கு இரண்டாயிரம் வருடங்களுக்கும் முன்னர் மஹிந்த தேரருக்கும் அப்போதைய அரசராக இருந்த தேவநம்பியதிஸ்ஸ மன்னருக்கும் இடையிலான சந்திப்பு இலங்கை வரலாற்றில் ஒரு முக்கிய நிகழ்வாகும். எமது சமூக பெறுமானங்கள், பொருளாதாரம், இலக்கியம், கலைகள் மட்டுமன்றி கைவினை முறைமைகள் கூட புதிய பரிமாணத்தை பெற்றது. வானளாவ உயர்ந்த தாகபைகள், பெரும் சமுத்திரங்களை ஒத்த குளங்கள், நாட்டை தன்னிறைவடையச் செய்த விவசாய கலாசாரம், உலகமே வியக்கும் கலைப் படைப்புகள், இவற்றுக்கெல்லாம் மேலாக புத்த பெருமானின் அட்டாங்க மார்க்கம் என்ற எண்வகை நெறிகளால் போசிக்கப்பட்ட, நீர், நிலம், தாவரங்கள், சூழல் உட்பட அனைத்து உயிரினங்களுக்கும் நீதி செலுத்தும், மிதவாத வாழ்க்கை முறையை கொண்ட, இலங்கை பௌத்தர்கள் உருவானதும் இந்த சமூக, கலாசார புரட்சியின் மூலமாகவேயாகும்
மஹிந்த தேரர் போதித்த சமய மற்றும் வாழ்க்கை நெறியின் அடிப்படையிலேயே நாம் ஒரு கீர்த்திமிக்க தேசமாக முன்னோக்கிப் பயணித்திருக்கின்றோம். ஈருலகினதும் நன்மைக்காக சமய நன்நெறிகளின் அடிப்படையிலான ஒழுக்கப் பண்பாடான சமூகமொன்றை உருவாக்குவதற்கும் அது அடித்தளமாக அமைந்தது. எனவே, கடந்த காலத்திற்கு மட்டுமன்றி எதிர்காலத்திற்கும் நாம் ஒரு தேசமாக பெற்றுள்ள பெறுமதிவாய்ந்த மரபுரிமையான பௌத்த சமயம் எமக்குக் கிடைக்கப்பெற்ற உன்னத தினம் பொசன் நோன்மதி தினமாகும் என்பது அனைத்து உள்ளங்களிலும் ஆழப் பதிந்துள்ளது.
வரலாற்றிலிருந்து பெற்ற அனுபவங்கள் மற்றும் பௌத்த சமயத்தின் மூலம் கிடைத்த செல்வாக்கிற்கு அமைவாகவே நாம் ஒரு சுபீட்சமான தேசத்தை நோக்கி நாட்டை வழிநடத்துகின்றோம். ஆன்மீக ரீதியாகவும் ஒழுக்க ரீதியாகவும் பண்பட்ட வளமானதொரு சமூகத்திலேயே அனைவருக்கும் நீதி சாத்தியமானது என்பது எனது நம்பிக்கையாகும். இந்த அடிப்படையிலிருந்தே எனது அரசாங்கம் நிகழ்காலத்திற்கு மட்டுமன்றி எதிர்காலத்திற்குமான திட்டங்களை நடைமுறைப்படுத்துகின்றது என்பதை குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். நாடு தற்போது முகம்கொடுத்துள்ள நோய்த்தொற்றுக்கு மத்தியிலும் கூட நாம் பண்பாட்டின் அடிப்படையிலான அந்த தத்துவத்திலிருந்து விலகிடவில்லை. மேற்குறித்த அடிப்படையிலல்லாத ஒரு பயணம் இலங்கையர்களான எமக்கு இல்லை.
இவ்வருட பொசன் பண்டிகை காலம் சமூகத்தையும் வாழ்க்கையையும் பௌத்த சமய போதனைகளுக்கு ஏற்ப யதார்த்தமாக பார்ப்பதற்கும், அகிம்சாவாத பௌத்த சமயத்தின் புகழை உலகிற்கு எடுத்துக்காட்டுவதற்குமான சந்தர்ப்பமாக ஆக்கிக்கொள்வதே மஹிந்த தேரருக்கு செய்யக்கூடிய உயர்ந்த கௌரவமாகும் என நான் கருதுகின்றேன்.

It has been the practice of the Buddhist in our country since ancient times to remember, with utmost devotion the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Thero in the Island carrying the message of the Buddha, by observance of religious rituals. Such devoted remembrance is due to the fact that the arrival of Arahat Mahinda resulted in a significant transformation of religious, cultural, social and political civilization of Sri Lanka.
The first meeting between the Arahat and King Devanampiyatissa, that took place over two thousand years ago, is the most significant encounter in Sri Lankan history. With the advent of Arahat Mahinda, our social values, economy, literature and arts and crafts took a new turn. Henceforth, the Buddhists of Sri Lanka were inspired to build sky-scraping stupas, ocean like gigantic lakes, an agrarian culture that secured the granary of the nation and produce incredible artistic creations that amazed the world. Even more importantly, this socio-religious revolution gave birth to a society that accepts gain and loss, fame and defame, praise and blame, and happiness and pain with equanimity; treats all living beings from plants to creatures big and small with utmost fairness; living a life of purity sans lust or unwarranted attachments and live in accordance with the eight-fold noble path.
The Dhamma and the knowledge base passed on by Arahat Mahinda Thera guided us to rise as a proud and dignified nation. The teachings of the Gauthama Buddha trained us to be mindful of this world and the afterworld and thus be virtuous and civilized. The Poson Poya is etched in our hearts as the most significant day because that was the day we received the Buddha Dhamma, the greatest ever gift we got as a nation.
Strengthened by our past experiences and inspired by Dhamma, we strive for prosperity. It is my belief that justice for all prevails in a spiritually virtuous, disciplined and prosperous society. I must mention here that my Government plans for not only the present, but also for the future based on that solid foundation. Even whilst facing the prevailing pandemic, we did not deviate from our vision that is built on that civilized culture we inherited. A journey without this reality is not possible for us as Sri Lankans.
The greatest tribute we can pay to Arahat Mahinda would be to celebrate this season of Poson by viewing the life in a pragmatic manner in accordance with the Dhamma and depicting to the world the pristine glory of the teachings of the Buddha, based on compassion and nonviolence.
