Sri Lanka showcased strong commitment to sustainable financing at the Fifth Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development held in Bangkok.
The Fifth Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development was held from 19-21 November 2025 at the Unite Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok. The Session was opened by Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). During the opening session, special remarks were made by H.E. Ahmed Mazin, Minister of State for
Finance and Planning of Maldives, Mr. Benjarong Suwankiri, Vice-Minister of Finance of Thailand and the Secretary-General of UNCTAD. The meeting brought together key member States,
including Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Maldives, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Türkiye, the United States of America, and Viet Nam, reflecting strong regional engagement in advancing inclusive and sustainable development financing.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lankan Airlines, organized “Sri Lanka: Your Next Best Destination”, Tourism Promotional Evening, on 24 November 2025 at the Avani Riverside Hotel, Bangkok, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
EEC Authorities Led Members of Diplomatic Council to Visit VISTEC and EECi
On Thursday 22 September, VISTEC and the EECi had an opportunity to welcome guests from the Diplomatic Council headed by Dato’ Steve Cheah.
The diplomatic council is a unique organization with consultative status to United Nations ECOSOC combining a global think tank, a world leading business network and a charitable foundation.
The visitors were ambassadors, charge d’affairs, counselors, attache’s, commissioners, secretaries, and diplomats of specific duties from 19 countries that have diplomatic establishments in Thailand. Diplomatic Council members came with a mission to explore and learn more about the activities of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) where Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) and the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi) are part of the setup.
At VISTEC Auditorium, guests were greeted by Dr. Janekrishna Kanatharana, Executive Vice President of NSTDA and Executive Director of the EECi, together with Professor Dr. Pimchai Chaiyen, VISTEC Dean of Biomolecular Science and Engineering (BSE).
Dr. Janekrishna gave details on the roles of EECi in modern agriculture, biorefinery industry, modern transports, UAV sandbox, industrial transformation, and the establishment of the 3GeV 4th generation synchrotron facility for use by all, including neighboring countries. Professor Dr. Pimchai Chaiyen explained to the guests the story behind the establishment of VISTEC. She also outlined one of the works done at the BSE where deep research in molecular biology could be applied to support BCG economy of the Thailand 4.0 policy.
Visitors got an opportunity to visit VISTEC Centre of Excellence for Energy Storage Technology (CEST) where Associate Professor Dr. Montree Sawangphruk of the School of Energy Science and Engineering (ESE) guided the visitors through the facilities that produce the Li-ion batteries (VISBAT).
After having lunch at THE EnCony, Khun Aphitchaya Saisa-ard, the Deputy Director of EEC Department of Investment Promotion Strategy, led the visitors to Chonburi to learn about the Eastern Economic Corridor of Digital (EECd).
