As part of its ongoing efforts to promote tourism, trade, and cultural diplomacy, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand organized a culinary and promotional event titled “A Taste of Sri Lanka at Mrs. Balbir’s Cooking School” in Bangkok, in collaboration with Mrs. Vinder Balbir, a renowned chef, restaurateur, and television cooking show host based in Bangkok, Thailand.
The event was attended by Ambassadors, culinary professionals and students, as well as representatives from the hospitality and travel sectors, importers, and other business stakeholders.
A highlight of the programme was a live cooking demonstration conducted by the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe. During the demonstration, selected Sri Lankan dishes including Sri Lankan Cashew Curry (Kaju Maluwa), Young Jackfruit Curry (Polos Curry), and Sri Lankan Fish Cutlets were prepared. The Ambassador provided an explanatory narration throughout the session, highlighting the ingredients, preparation methods, and cultural significance of each dish.
Following the demonstration, participants were hosted to a Sri Lankan lunch buffet, allowing guests to experience authentic Sri Lankan cuisine.
In addition, audio-visual presentations on Sri Lanka’s tourism destinations, cultural heritage, wellness tourism, and export-oriented products were screened, highlighting Sri Lanka’s potential as a year-round tourism destination and a reliable trading partner, particularly in the food and beverages, spices, tea, and handicrafts sectors.
The event provided a useful platform to promote Sri Lanka as a preferred destination for Thai travellers and to encourage engagement between Sri Lankan exporters and Thai importers, thereby contributing to the strengthening of bilateral economic and people-to-people relations.
