Ambassador designate of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand Wijayanthi Edirisinghe assumes duties

Mrs. E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe (SLFS I) Director General, Training and Research of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a career member of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service (SLFSI) and has remained affiliated with the Sri Lanka diplomatic service since 2003. While she assumed duties as Director General HRD, R & T and, she has even functioned in the capacity of Executive Director (Acting) at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studied. This stint spanned 1st January to 18th June 2023.

Mrs. Edirisinghe has served at several diplomatic assignments, including the Sri Lanka Embassy based in Washington D.C, USA; as Minister / Deputy Head of Mission and Chargé d’ Affaires a.i. from 25th October 2018 to 15th March 2022. She was made Deputy Chief of Protocol at the Sri Lanka Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which role she served from September 2016 to October 2018, coordinating with Diplomatic Missions, all apex tier visits, seminars and meetings.

As Deputy High Commissioner and Minister representing the Sri Lanka High Commission in Islamabad, Pakistan, from April 2011 to September 2016, she advanced and propelled Sri Lanka-Pakistan bilateral equation. Simultaneously, Mrs. Edirisinghe enhanced cooperation between South Asia Cooperation Environment Programme, SAARC Arbitrary Council. Her mandate in Islamabad saw her serve as acting High Commissioner from April 2015 to December 2015 where she was able to greatly reinforce relations between both countries.

From 2009 to 2011, Mrs. Edirisinghe was assigned as Deputy Director, Consular Affairs Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs from March 2009 to April 2011.

She was sent as First Secretary, Embassy of Sri Lanka, Warsaw, Poland from August 2005 to February 2009 and attended to responsibilities as Chargé d’ Affaires a.i. from November 2006 – August 2007.

Mrs. E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe’s career has taken her to Central Europe, the Far East, South Asia and North America. She has functioned in the capacities of Acting High Commissioner and Chargé d’ Affaires a.i. on several occasions. Her tours of duty overseas have exposed Ms. Edirisinghe to unique circumstances and ambiences in terms of cultural and bilateral interface. She has honed her skills in inculcating deeper and more impactful rendezvous between people systems and social fabrics.

From Ms. Edirisinghe’s perceptible interjections have emerged tangible advances in Sri Lanka’s economic, political, cultural and security interests. Her academic credentials in International Relations are borne out through a degree each in M.Sc IR from National Defence University, Islamabad; and, M.Phil. from Preston University, Islamabad. Her linguistic aptitude encompasses Sinhala, English, Tamil and Japanese.

She is married to her spouse Lakmal de Silva and has two teenage daughters.
