Sri Lanka and Thailand Strengthen Educational Ties During Ministerial Visit
As part of his official visit to Thailand, Hon. Dr. Upali Pannilage, Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment of Sri Lanka, led a delegation to meet with Associate Professor Khunying Sumonta Promboon, President and the academic staff of the Chitralada Technology Institute, on 22 April 2026.
82nd Session of ESCAP Concludes with Strong Regional Commitments: Sri Lanka Highlights Active Engagement
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, Thailand, Sri Lanka actively participated in the 82nd Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, held from 20 to 24 April 2026, reaffirming its commitment to advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development across the Asia-Pacific region.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and Sri Lankan Airlines, organized “Sri Lanka: Your Next Best Destination”, Tourism Promotional Evening, on 24 November 2025 at the Avani Riverside Hotel, Bangkok, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The event opened with welcome remarks delivered by the Ambassador & permanent
Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, who highlighted the enduring friendship, cultural affinity, and growing cooperation between the two nations over the past seven decades. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of tourism as a pillar of bilateral engagement and invited Thai travellers to explore Sri Lanka’s rich heritage, natural beauty, and diverse experiences.
Guests were presented with a curated selection of documentary films by Winson Films,
showcasing Sri Lanka’s iconic heritage sites, including Mihintale, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy, and Sigiriya. The visual journey highlighted Sri Lanka’s historical and cultural legacy, reinforcing its position as a premier destination for heritage tourism.
A special fashion segment by Buddhi Batiks, featuring Thai models, added vibrant colour to the evening, presenting contemporary designs inspired by traditional Sri Lankan batik
craftsmanship. The event also featured musical performances by Miss Sri Lanka 2021, delighting the audience with renditions that celebrated Sri Lankan culture.
The programme concluded with a networking session attended by representatives from Sri Lanka and Thai travel industry, media, influencers, and members of the diplomatic community. Participants engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening tourism partnerships and enhancing people-to-people linkages between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
