The Consular Service is the portal through which the Ministry of Foreign Relations provides consular assistance to the general public. Consular services to the public are provided under the terms of the Consular Functions Act No. 4 of 1981.

About our Consular Service :

Eligibility

  • At least one of the parties to the marriage should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • Both parties should not be under 18 years of age

Notice of Marriage

Under normal license:

Parties should give Notice of Marriage to the Embassy 14 days prior to the registration of marriage.

The marriage may be registered in the Embassy after a lapse of twelve (12) working days from the date of receipt of the Notice of Marriage and within three (03) months from such date. 

Under special license:
Parties should give Notice of Marriage to the Embassy 2-3 days prior to the registration of marriage.

Required Documents

Following documents are required to submit to the Embassy together with the Notice of Marriage:
  1. Passports of both parties. (with photocopies of bio-data page, alterations page and current visa page)
  2. Original Birth Certificates of both parties (should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
  3. National Identity Card (NIC) of both parties
  4. Passports of two witnesses (Two Sri Lankan passport holders)
  5. National Identity Card of the two witnesses
  6. Affidavit for Civil status/unmarried status of both parties, declared before a Justice of Peace/Diplomatic officer. 
    • Affidavits obtained in Sri Lanka should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country
    • Any Foreign party obtain an unmarried certificate, stating their civil status/unmarried status from relevant Government authority, it should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country
    • Divorcees should submit Divorce Certificate (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
    • In case of widow/widower, should submit the previous marriage certificate and death certificate of the spouse (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
  7. Security Clearance Report (When registering marriages between Sri Lankans and Foreign Nationals, original ‘Security Clearance Report’ obtained from the security authority of the relevant country, indicating that ‘there is no any convict for offense during the period of six month’ should be submitted by the foreign party).
  8. Health Declaration Form ( A self-declaration of the health condition should be submitted by the relevant foreigner – Click Here)
  • Affidavits obtained in Sri Lanka should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country

Registration of Marriage

The date and time for registration will be notified to the party, once the application is processed and accepted by the Embassy

Certified copies of Marriage Certificates will be issued on a subsequent date by the Embassy, if required. Additional copies of the Marriage Certificate could be obtained on payment of the prescribed fee 

Applicable Fees

  • Notice of a Marriage – 660 THB
  • Registration of Marriage under normal license – 1089 THB
  • Registration of Marriage under special licence – 1452 THB
  • Issuance of Certified Copy of a Marriage Certificate – 429 THB
  • Application of a Marriage license under Section 24 (Special License) Free of Charge
