Strengthening Buddhist Heritage Diplomacy: Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Thailand Delivers a Lecture at Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to UNESCAP in Bangkok, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, was invited to deliver a lecture on “Guardians of the Dhamma: The Role of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and Anagarika Dharmapala’s Pioneering Efforts to Preserve Buddhagaya” at the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, one of Thailand’s foremost centres of Buddhist higher education on 17 March 2026.
Ambassador Hosts Ms. Sri Lanka 2025 to Promote Cultural and Creative Collaboration Between Sri Lanka and Thailand
The Ambassador & Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, recently hosted Ms. Sri Lanka 2025, Prathiba Liyanarachchi, at the Official Residence of the Ambassador in Bangkok. The meeting was attended by members of the Embassy staff and several Sri Lankan ladies residing in Thailand.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok together with visiting delegation had a meeting with the Office of National Buddhism of Thailand, a central government agency under the Prime Minister’s Office. This agency is responsible for the administration of Buddhism in the country.
The Sri Lankan delegation was led by the Most Venerable, Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, Chief Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo. The visiting dignitaries called on Associate Professor Dr. Chachapon Jayaphorn, Acting Director of the Secretariat Office of the Sangha Supreme Council.
The interaction focused on the deep-rooted cultural and religious linkages shared by Sri Lanka and Thailand through Theravada Buddhism and explored avenues to expand ongoing cultural & religious collaboration between the two countries.
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, highlighted the significance achievements of cultural and religious ties with Thailand and events which organised for the commemoration of 70 years marking diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand this year. Dr. Jayaphorn assured that the fullest support will be extended for future activities organized for strengthening religious and cultural ties.
The Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero even extended an invite for a high-level representation of the Government of Thailand to participate at the Nawam Perahera to be organized in Colombo in February 2026. The meeting was attended by Dr. Dulan Hettiarachchi, Chairman, Task Force for Tourism (Western Province), Ms. Thilini Ihalage, Minister Counsellor and Head of Chancery and Ms. Shiwanthi Abeyrathne, Minister Counsellor/Commerce of the Mission.
