Sri Lanka Illuminate Bangkok with the Spirit of Vesak at Historic Wat Pho

In a solemn and spiritually uplifting celebration of the International Day of Vesak 2026, the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka together with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Nepal in Bangkok jointly hosted a special commemorative event on 28 May 2026 at the iconic Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan (Wat Pho), one of Thailand’s most sacred and historically significant Buddhist temples.

Recalling the long tradition of friendly relationship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, which has been flourishing on the bedrock of Theravada Buddhism, Ambassador-Designate Mrs. Samantha K. Jayasuriya said Sri Lanka offers for Thai travelers with different interests, a very authentic and diverse array of travel experience. “the Siam chapter of Sri Lanka and Lankawamsa in Thailand, to Kandy and Ayutthaya sister cities, excellent irrigation technologies and heritage, the wellness and spiritual activities to Buddhist tourism trail, are all in offer to experience within a short duration of time” she said. Mrs. Jayasuriya made these comments addressing a group of about 30 Thai outbound Travel Agents at a promotional luncheon jointly organized by the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) in Bangkok and NKAR Travels & Tours (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka.

She further said “from Marco Polo who in the 13 Century identified Sri Lanka as the finest island of its size in the world, the present day travel market too has recognized Sri Lanka as the No 1 travel destination”.

The event also provided an opportunity to introduce the ‘visa fee free scheme’ offered by the Government of Sri Lanka to travelers from 48 countries including Thailand which is valid until 31st of January 2020. Interactive dialogue with senior officers of Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) and travel agents who attended the event helped to get a better insight about new trends and interests of Thai travelers.

Mr. Anil Sirimanna, First Secretary (Commerce), Ms. Saritha Ranatunga, Second Secretary of the Sri Lanka Embassy and Dr. Damian Fernando, Chief Operating Officer-Inbound of NKAR Travels & Tours (Pvt) LTD and 30 Thai travel agents participated at the event and discussion promoting the ‘So Sri Lanka’ brand.
