Today, Hon. Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the 77th Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) highlighted the measures taken to recover the pandemic hit socio-economic activities and progress in achieving sustainable development goals. The Session will be held from 26-29 April 2021.

The Prime Minister addresses the 77th session of the UN Asian and Pacific Economic and Social Commission.
Hon ‘ ble Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksha addressed the 77th session of the UN Asian and Pacific Economic and Social Commission (UNESCAP) through a video message today (26).
The theme of the 77th session from April 26th to 29th is ′′ Let’s stand back through more sober crises than before through Asian and Pacific regional cooperation
The discussion on the COVID epidemic will take a key place in this session and also discuss issues such as climate change, debt relief, investment, equal health access, sustainable development, and regional cooperation.

I was pleased to address the 77th session of the UN Asian and Pacific Economic and Social Commission.
Despite the current challenges, it is very important for us to attend this session.
I believe that the theme of this session will be very timely and important in a timely period where we are all making strategic plans to rebuild the economy and social status in the face of the epidemic.
Sri Lanka has made remarkable progress in controlling the spread of COVID-19 in the past.
We were able to identify COVID patients especially, maintain the quarantine process through their relationships, quarantine and treat patients and maintain a low mortality rate.
Sri Lanka has a strong public health care program. Free healthcare facilities helped manage the epidemic situation.
Our government was able to vaccinate one lakh Sri Lankans in last February.
On this background, even in the face of the epidemic situation, we worked to maintain economic activities through several sectors. Also, we were able to resume the tourism business from last January by continuously running export activities.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has implemented many remodeling programs by providing loan relief to the people.
Still our government is committed to achieving the global sustainable development goals. For this, I have formed an Inter Ministerial Operations Committee to achieve the sustainable development goals under my leadership.
Young girls have a very important place in our development agenda as the government has declared 2021-2030 as the decade of skill development.
We are also excited to strengthen regional ties. And we stress the need to accelerate South-South cooperation.
We believe that the Asian and Pacific Economic and Social Commission of the United Nations should respond to this by taking action through several sectors.
• For small countries affected by the epidemic situation to get rid of the same situation
Supporting the vaccination program
• Improving employment opportunities abroad and encouraging them
• Promoting environmental and health tourism businesses
.
• Encouraging investments in developing countries and finding them market
In the meantime, it’s very important. We highly appreciate the United Nations Asian and Pacific Economic and Social Commission working to bring social countries to one platform by organizing this session very timely to finally stand up to the COVID epidemic situation.
