Ambassador & Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka attends 8th South and South-West Asia Forum on Sustainable Development in New Delhi
The Eighth South and South-West Asia Forum on Sustainable Development has taken place in New Delhi, India from 11th to 12th November 2024, co-hosted by the NITI Aayog of the Government of India and Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP), in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator, with a strong call for renewed commitment, accelerated efforts and innovative solutions to meet development ambitions. The Ambassador & Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe was invited to attend the forum.
Promoting Buddhist Religious Tourism: Sri Lanka and Thailand Collaborate on ‘Solosmastana’ Documentary
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Public Broadcasting Service of Thailand (Thai PBS), are producing a documentary on ‘Solosmastana’, featuring the 16 sacred religious sites of Sri Lanka. This initiative aims to strengthen Buddhist religious tourism between the two nations, highlighting shared cultural and spiritual heritage.

State Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka Shehan Semasinghe led the Sri Lanka Delegation to the 04th Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development from 01-03 November 2023 at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand
State Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka Shehan Semasinghe led the Sri Lanka Delegation to the 04th Session of the Committee on Macroeconomic Policy, Poverty Reduction and Financing for Development from 01-03 November 2023 at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand.
After the opening remarks made by the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, State Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka Shehan Semasinghe delivered the keynote remarks at the session.
In his keynote remarks, the State Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka, Shehan Semasinghe stated as fiscal deficits have become common in both developed and developing countries, borrowing for budget finance needs to be looked at in a new light. Indeed, a new approach is necessary in particular to circumvent the present approach’s undue favoritism of short-term public debt sustainability at the expense of long-term economic and social development.
At the session, Ambassador of Sri Lanka and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, C. A. Chaminda I. Colonne was elected as one of the Vice Chairs.
On the sidelines of the Forum, State Minister Semasinghe held bilateral discussions with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of UNESCAP, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Deputy Minister of Finance of Thailand, Julapun Amornvivat and Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation (NEDA).
The delegation comprised of Ambassador of Sri Lanka and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, C. A. Chaminda I. Colonne, Additional Director General of the Department of External Resources, Visakha Amarasekere, First Secretary/Deputy Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, A.W.S Samanmali and First Secretary (Commercial)/Deputy Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Vireshika Bandara.
