15 Sri Lankans Rescued from Cybercrime Centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar to be Repatriated on 07 May 2025

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, in close coordination with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Myanmar, has successfully facilitated the rescue of 15 Sri Lankan nationals who had been trafficked and forcibly employed in cybercrime centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar on 06th May 2025. The rescued individuals are scheduled to be repatriated to Sri Lanka on 07 May 2025.

Addressing the 9th Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Justice Hon. Ali Sabry highlighted that economic transformation underpinned on green growth and stronger law enforcement and rights protection regime (as an enabler to achieve all SDGs) are the key strategies identified by Sri Lanka to recover from the Covid 19 pandemic and advance the full implementation of the SDGs. He further emphasized that Sri Lanka is taking steps to unlock new levels of capital through innovative financing mechanisms to achieve SDGs during challenging times as a result of the impacts of the Covid 19 pandemic.
The Ninth Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development is convened under the auspices of UNESCAP (as a hybrid event) from 28 to 31 March in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hon. M. U. M. Ali Sabri-Minister of Justice, Her Excellency C. A. Chaminda I. Colonne-Ambassador Extraordinary, Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UNESCAP; Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, Ms. Chamindry Saparamadu- Director General-Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka, Ms. Vireshika Bandara -First Secretary and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UNESCAP; Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, Ms. A. W. S. Samanmali-Second Secretary and Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the UNESCAP; Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok represented Sri Lanka delegation at the forum and Mr. R. P. A. Wimalaweera-Additional Secretary–Ministry of Economic Policies and Plan Implementation, Mr. R. H. W. A. Kumarasiri-Director General-National Planning Department, Ms. Sheron Hewawaduge-Assistant Director-Sustainable Development Council of Sri Lanka joined virtually from Colombo.
