Embassy and permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok Commemorates the 78th Anniversary of Independence
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka with an official ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at the Residence of the Ambassador, with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community, distinguished guests, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and members of the diplomatic corps.
Pirith Chanting Ceremony held in Bangkok Marks Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Anniversary and invokes blessing for peace, resilience and friendship
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok held a solemn Pirith chanting ceremony on 03 February 2026 at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka. The ceremony was organized under the guidance of H E Wijayanthi Edirisighe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand and was arranged by the officials of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok.
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe and the Embassy Staff paid a courtesy visit to the revered Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan (Wat Pho Temple) where she met with the esteemed Abbot, Most Venerable Phra Thepsithikarn.
Most Venerable Phra Thepsithikarn warmly welcomed the Ambassador and the staff, highlighting the long-standing ties between Sri Lanka and Thailand, both deeply rooted in Buddhist tradition.
In a gesture of goodwill and mutual respect, the Abbot bestowed blessings upon the Ambassador, wishing for continued harmony and cooperation between the two nations. The Ambassador took this opportunity to discuss initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural exchanges and enhancing buddhist relations.
Wat Pho, known as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok, attracting visitors from around the world. The temple is renowned for its stunning architecture and intricate murals.
In a spirit of interfaith harmony, the Ambassador E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe also visited the Maha Mariamman Hindu Temple where she was warmly received by the Head Priest and the President of the Hindu Temple.
The Head Priest conducted a traditional blessing ceremony with prayers for peace, prosperity, and continued development of the people of Sri Lanka and Thailand.
