The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok held a solemn Pirith chanting ceremony on 03 February 2026 at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka. The ceremony was organized under the guidance of H E Wijayanthi Edirisighe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand and was arranged by the officials of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok.
“Discover the Magic Within”: Inspirational Session at Siam University Organized by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand organized an inspirational session at Siam University, Bangkok, with the aim of encouraging students to recognize their inner potential, cultivate self-belief, and discover their sense of purpose.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka with an official ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at the Residence of the Ambassador, with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community, distinguished guests, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and members of the diplomatic corps.
The ceremony commenced by the hoisting of the National Flag with the traditional beats of Magul Bera and the singing of the National Anthem of Sri Lanka. This was followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, symbolizing unity, hope, and prosperity. A two-minute silence was thereafter observed in solemn remembrance of all those who made the supreme sacrifice for the nation’s freedom and independence. Multi-religious observances were conducted by the Venerable members of the Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, and Christian clergy, invoking blessings for peace, harmony, and prosperity for Sri Lanka and its people, in keeping with the country’s rich religious and cultural diversity.
The event was graced by Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, as the Chief Guest, reflecting the longstanding friendship and close cooperation between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
Delivering remarks on the occasion, H.E. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand underscored the enduring significance of Independence Day as an occasion for reflection on Sri Lanka’s journey as a sovereign nation, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to democratic values, reconciliation, and sustainable development. The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of unity and resilience among Sri Lankans, both at home and abroad.
National Day messages by H.E. the President, the Hon. Prime Minister, and the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka were read in Sinhala, Tamil, and English, symbolizing inclusivity and the shared national identity of all Sri Lankans.
The ceremony concluded with a luncheon for the invitees, showcasing traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and an assortment of sweetmeats, providing an opportunity for guests and members of the Sri Lankan community to come together in a spirit of national pride and solidarity.
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening Sri Lanka–Thailand relations, anchored in longstanding cultural, religious, and people-to-people ties.
