Embassy and permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok Commemorates the 78th Anniversary of Independence
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok commemorated the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka with an official ceremony held on 4 February 2026 at the Residence of the Ambassador, with the participation of members of the Sri Lankan community, distinguished guests, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and members of the diplomatic corps.
Pirith Chanting Ceremony held in Bangkok Marks Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Anniversary and invokes blessing for peace, resilience and friendship
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok held a solemn Pirith chanting ceremony on 03 February 2026 at the Official Residence of the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Independence of Sri Lanka. The ceremony was organized under the guidance of H E Wijayanthi Edirisighe, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand and was arranged by the officials of the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok.
The staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok marked the traditional Thai New Year, Songkran, with customary rituals and celebrations at the Embassy premises, reinforcing the cultural and religious ties shared between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
The event commenced with the traditional pouring of water on the hands of senior staff members as a gesture of respect and blessing for the New Year. The ceremony reflected the deep-rooted Buddhist cultural attractions between the two countries and served as a symbol of goodwill and renewal.
Following the Songkran rituals, the staff also resumed official duties after the Sinhala and Hindu New Year with traditional Sri Lankan sweetmeats, signifying unity and the spirit of festivity.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe highlighted the significance of cultural celebrations in strengthening people-to-people ties and fostering mutual understanding. She also extended her best wishes to the staff and their families for a prosperous and peaceful New Year.
The Embassy’s participation in both Songkran and the Sinhala and Hindu New Year celebrations underscores the close cultural and religious bonds between Sri Lanka and Thailand, rooted in shared Theravāda Buddhist traditions.
