The 2nd anniversary of the Herostone (Nadukal) was commemorated at Wat Thaworn Wararam, honoring the tens of thousands of Asian civilian forced laborers who perished during the construction of the Burma Railway construction, also known as the Thai-Burma “Death Railway,” during World War II.
Symbol of Faith and Friendship: Buddha Statue Gifted to Sri Lanka by Thai Devotees
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok is pleased to announce the ceremonial handover of a seven-foot-tall Buddha statue to the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, at Wat Hatainaresh Temple.
The King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua of the Kingdom of Thailand has graciously granted a Royal Audience to E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, on 20th October 2024, for the Presentation of Letter of Credence at Amphorn Royal Palace in Bangkok.
The King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua extended sincere best wishes to the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and recalled strong long-standing relations with Sri Lanka. While congratulating Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, the King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua assured fullest support of the Kingdom in discharging her official duties and fulfillment of the mission.
Ambassador Edirisinghe expressed her eagerness to work collaboratively on mutual interests, including trade, education, cultural exchange, and sustainable development and people to people ties. She highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation in addressing regional challenges and promoting peace and stability.
The event underscores the commitment of Sri Lanka to nurturing its relationship with Thailand, a key partner in the region. As both nations look to the future, the foundation of friendship and cooperation remains steadfast.
Ambassador Edirisinghe is also concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Prior to being assigned Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Ambassador Edirisinghe served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capacity of Director General at the helm of the Human Resource Development, Research & Training, Performance Review and implementation Division.
She commenced her diplomatic career in 2003 when she joined the Sri Lanka Foreign Service. Her career resume depicts her serving in various capacities both at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as at Sri Lanka’s Missions abroad.
Ambassador Edirisinghe’s last overseas assignment was as Minister at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington. She has amassed her experience too with successful stints at Warsaw and Islamabad. Ambassador holds a Mphil and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the National Defence University {NDU} Islamabad, Pakistan and is a past pupil of Sripali College in Horana, Sri Lanka.
