Ambassador of Sri Lanka Meets with Director General of Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion

15 Sri Lankans Rescued from Cybercrime Centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar to be Repatriated on 07 May 2025
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, in close coordination with the Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Thailand and the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Myanmar, has successfully facilitated the rescue of 15 Sri Lankan nationals who had been trafficked and forcibly employed in cybercrime centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar on 06th May 2025. The rescued individuals are scheduled to be repatriated to Sri Lanka on 07 May 2025.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka Contributes to UNESCAP – Side Event during the 81st ESCAP Commission Session
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand and the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Wijayanthi Edirisinghe invited to attend a panel discussion at the BIMSTEC-ESCAP side event held during the 81st ESCAP Commission Session under the theme “Harnessing Digital Technologies for Sustainable Development in the Bay of Bengal Region.” On 23.04.2025.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, held a productive meeting with Sunanta Kangvalkulkij, Director General of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand on 14th January 2025. The meeting reinforced the long-standing and cordial bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and Thailand, built upon shared cultural, religious, and trade ties.
During the discussion, Ambassador Edirisinghe expressed appreciation for Thailand’s continuous efforts in enhancing international trade and emphasized the critical role of the DITP in promoting Thai businesses globally.
The Ambassador also highlighted Sri Lanka’s robust participation in Thailand’s leading trade events such as Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fairs, Thaifex Anuga and Style Bangkok in 2025, showcasing the country’s commitment to deepening trade relations. These platforms will serve as vital opportunities to showcase Sri Lankan products, foster business partnerships, and further enhance economic ties between the two countries.
The Director General Sunanta Kangvalkulkij appreciated Sri Lanka’s active participation in these prominent trade exhibitions and emphasized the significant trade and tourism potential Sri Lanka holds. Both parties recognized the immense potential to strengthen bilateral trade, particularly with the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is set to come into effect this year.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to leveraging the Sri Lanka-Thailand FTA to unlock new opportunities and advance mutual economic growth.
