Sri Lanka Ambassador Leads Tribute at Herostone (Nadukal) 2nd Anniversary Commemoration in Kanchanaburi,Thailand

The 2nd anniversary of the Herostone (Nadukal) was commemorated at Wat Thaworn Wararam, honoring the tens of thousands of Asian civilian forced laborers who perished during the construction of the Burma Railway construction, also known as the Thai-Burma “Death Railway,” during World War II.

The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, H.E Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, together with distinguished dignitaries, including H.E Datuk Wan Zaidi Wan Abdullah, Ambassador of Malaysia, Ms. Waritha Sanguansermsri, Governor of Kanchanaburi, Mr. R. Muthu, Counsellor at the Embassy of India, Air Commodore Vajira Jayakody, Defence Attaché of Sri Lanka and Mr. Amigo Sockalinga, writer of the commemorative song “Romusha,” which was launched at the event.

A key highlight of the ceremony was the address delivered by H.E. the Ambassador,  Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, who attended as a Special Invited Guest. In her remarks, she paid heartfelt tribute to the Asian laborers, emphasizing the importance of remembering their sacrifices and ensuring that their stories remain an integral part of our shared history.

The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of Malaysia in Thailand and the Malaysians in Thailand (MIB) Club, the event served as a meaningful reminder of the resilience of Tamil and other Asian laborers, whose contributions have long been underrepresented.
