Sri Lanka–Thailand Medical Partnership to Deliver 71 Free Knee Surgeries

A special Buddhist fundraising event was held in support of a landmark humanitarian medical initiative aimed at enhancing access to orthopedic care in Sri Lanka. The event took place under the spiritual patronage of revered Thai Buddhist monks Ven. Luang Por Inthawathai, Ven. Luang Por Sutham, and Ven. Luang Por Anilman, who have pledged to fully fund the project. This initiative will bring together a team of Thai orthopedic surgeons and medical experts from Siriraj Hospital to work alongside Sri Lankan counterparts in delivering high-quality care based on Thailand’s successful medical model. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, also participated in the event, expressing gratitude for the generous support extended by the Thai Buddhist clergy and reaffirming the strong cultural and humanitarian bonds between Sri Lanka and Thailand. The Head of Chancery A.W.S Samanmali and Minister Counsellor (Commercial) Vireshika Banadara also joined the discussions.

The project is scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Royal Thai Embassy in Colombo from 16 to 20 November 2025 and aims to provide 71 free knee replacement surgeries for Sri Lankan patients who are currently enduring prolonged surgical wait times due to resource constraints.

This meaningful programme is being organized to mark two significant milestones: the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand, and the 70th birthday anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok expresses deep appreciation for the generous support extended by the Thai Buddhist clergy and Siriraj Hospital. This project reflects the deep-rooted people-to-people ties between the two countries, grounded in shared values of compassion, service, and Theravāda Buddhist heritage.
