Ambassador of Sri Lanka Emphasizes Climate Resilience and Trade Integration in BIMSTEC Region
Strengthening Post-Disaster Recovery Cooperation: Ambassador of Thailand Meets Executive Director of ADPC
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe had a meeting with Mr. Aslam Perwaiz, Executive Director of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) at the ADPC premises, to discuss continued cooperation in post-disaster recovery and long-term resilience building in Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah. During the meeting, H.E. the Ambassador expressed
her sincere appreciation for the timely technical and monetary assistance extended by ADPC in response to the impacts of Cyclone Ditwah, which caused widespread damage across several parts of Sri Lanka. Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok Formally Commences Official Duties for the Year 2026
The Embassy and Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka in Bangkok, Thailand ceremonially commenced work for the year 2026 on 02 January, in keeping with government directives on the commencement of duties of public institutions for the New Year.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, joined as a guest speaker at a high-level event on regional trade and agricultural transformation in BIMSTEC countries recently. The event, organized by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in collaboration with the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) gathered experts, policymakers, and diplomats to tackle pressing issues related to agricultural trade, food security and climate resilience in the BIMSTEC region.
Ambassador Edirisinghe highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the vulnerabilities faced by BIMSTEC nations. She stated that for millions of farmers, agriculture is not just a livelihood, but a way of life, therefore a coordinated regional approach is crucial to mitigating climate risks and ensuring the resilience of food systems. She also emphasized that Sri Lanka is committed to promoting sustainable agricultural practices that support smallholder farmers and adopt climate smart solutions.
Distinguished speakers at the event included President of the Agricultural Economics Research Association of India, P. K. Joshi, Special Advisor to the Assistant Director General and Regional Representative at the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s Asia-Pacific Regional Office, Robert Simpson, Former Commerce Secretary of India, Anup Wadhawan, Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC and SAARC) of Ministry of External Affairs of India, C.S.R. Ram and the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Thailand, Faiyaz Murshid Kazi. Counsellor (Commercial), Vireshika Bandara of the Embassy also joined the event.
The discussions underscored the critical role of agricultural trade in tackling food and nutrition security, reducing poverty and enhancing climate resilience across the region. The insights and recommendations from the event provide a roadmap for future efforts aimed at fostering sustainable growth and stronger regional integration in the BIMSTEC region.
