Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok Participates in the International Conference on the Global Partnership against Online Scams in Bangkok
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), successfully co-hosted the International Conference on the Global Partnership against Online Scams in Bangkok, Thailand. The Conference aimed to strengthen and complement ongoing regional and international efforts to combat online scams and to enhance global cooperation to address existing operational gaps in tackling this complex form of transnational crime. The event brought together over 300 participants from 60 countries, including ministerial-level representatives, senior officials, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP Chairs 421st Session of the ACPR in Bangkok
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to Thailand, E.A.S. Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, participated in the 421st Session of the Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives (ACPR) held at the United Nations premises in Bangkok. The Ambassador was invited to chair the final ACPR session of the year, reflecting Sri Lanka’s active and constructive engagement with the UN system in the region.
Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, called on with the Minister of Commerce of Thailand, Pichai Naripthaphan on 12th March 2025 at the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand.
During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe expressed her appreciation for Thailand’s continued support and cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, and economic collaboration. The Ambassador also highlighted the potential to further enhance bilateral relations, especially in trade and investment, and expressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to fostering stronger economic ties with Thailand and welcomed Thailand’s proactive engagement in bilateral and regional trade initiatives.
In response, Minister Pichai Naripthaphan emphasized the potential to strengthen trade ties, particularly under the Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement, which is expected to come into effect soon. He also indicated that Thailand is on track to sign a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union by the end of this year.
The Minister further acknowledged Sri Lanka’s renowned gem industry and underscored the potential for collaboration in promoting gem and jewelry exports to Thailand. He also highlighted the opportunities in religious tourism and the importance of enhancing investment cooperation and capacity building between the two countries.
Both sides expressed their commitment to working together to unlock the full potential of bilateral trade and investment relations.
The meeting was attended by the Vice Minister of Commerce of Thailand, Suchart Chomkin, Director General of the Department of Trade Negotiations of Thailand, Chotima Iemsawasdikul and the Deputy Director General of the Department of International Trade Promotion of Thailand, Warawut Somwangprasert. First Secretary/Head of Chancery, A.W.S. Samanmali and Counsellor (Commercial), Vireshika Bandara of the Embassy also joined the discussion.
