Ambassador Wijayanthi Edirisinghe Meets Thai Senators to Strengthen Bilateral and Parliamentary Ties

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand and Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe, received a distinguished delegation of Senators from the Senate of Thailand at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bangkok on 18 June 2025.

The Thai delegation included Dr. Noppadol In-na, Senator, Vice Chairperson and member of the Senate Working Group on Science and Technology; Pichan Pornsiripratharn, Senator and Spokesman of the Senate Committee on Transportation; and Wasana Yossorn, Senator and Member of the Senate Committee on the Independent Organs under the Constitution, Anti-Corruption and Misconduct, and Good Governance Promotion.

During the meeting, both sides engaged in a productive discussion on the long-standing bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand, which are deeply rooted in shared cultural and religious ties. The Senators and the Ambassador reflected on the significance of the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries being commemorated this year with multiple activities by the Embassy of Sri Lanka together with Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.

Ambassador Edirisinghe extended an invitation to the President of the Senate of Thailand to undertake a visit to Sri Lanka, along with fellow Senators, to further enhance bilateral parliamentary exchanges. The discussion also focused on strengthening the Parliamentary Friendship Group between Sri Lanka and Thailand to foster greater inter-parliamentary collaboration.

The visiting Senators expressed keen interest in expanding cooperation in the fields of trade and tourism, and also discussed the potential for partnership in the agricultural sector, particularly in supporting local fruits farmers in Thailand. They requested possible collaboration and technical support from Sri Lanka to promote this sector in the future.
